I would like to take a friend to the shooting range, but they don't own a gun, and I was hoping to let them use mine. Is this legal, or does a person have to own a gun in order to fire it? I am a gun newb.

What country are you in? There are seldom laws against firing a gun in a range. If it is legal for you to fire, it is legal for them to fire. There are a few exceptions.

This is going to depend on what state you are in. I'm in PA and no matter where you are, the law really basis itself from the standard of your safety. Is your life or the life of others endangered, if the answer is yes then more than likely you will be able to show a reasonable person(people of the jury) that you had a right to defend yourself. Now if the person is not a threat, I would not shoot, you will probably be in trouble. Hope this helps. There is a wise saying not of my own though, "That I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6." Words to think about.

Not sure about Ohio; but here is how the Michigan laws are: you can let anyone (unless they have been lawfully prohibited from using firearms) fire your rifle and shotguns. Handguns, however, can only be fired by their registered owner. So to legally allow a friend to fire your handgun in Michigan, you have to transfer the handgun into their name through the local police department.

As long as its AT the firing range and you are in control and aware he is using it. Just be sure you get it back before leaving the range. AND MAKE CERTAIN he follows safety procedures. If he has never fired a gun before, he cant be just handling a loaded weapon like a toy gun. Safety first!
Never loan a gun for someone to just carry around. This is where gun owners can get into trouble.

You can shoot anybodies gun you want to, but remember if you do anything illegal and get caught then the game warden/ranger can give you a fine, take vehicle and gun, and place you under arrest. So make sure you know the laws about the type of hunting you are going to be doing or your friend probably won't be loaning you his gun again because he may not have it..

Not if they are a felon or otherwise unable to legally "possess" a gun. When they're holding it, they are in possession of it.
Friend of mine left his guns at his Dad's while he was out of town. Dad had a 15-year old felony. and the feds came in and took them.
He was charged with possession of a weapon illegally and my friend had to go to court to get his guns back.
Check to make sure he can legally possess a gun in that local.

As long as you gave the person permission to fire your gun, there should be no problem. I've shot many guns that weren't mine, and I never got arrested.

Yes you can loan him your gun. If you live in a jurisdiciton that requires gun registration, that only proves who owns the gun does not mandate who can use it, where or when. Other laws determine where and when a firearm can be discharged., each one varies with jurisdiction.

No problem as long as your friend isn't a felon or otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms.
