How do boxers end up playing each other? Is there a regular season? How is there a championship if there is no regular season? Thanks!

Its done via a grab bag system, jokingly some of the fighters refer to it as a "Kris Kringle".

They fight for the ranking in their respective boxing bodies (WBC, WBA, IBF, etc.)

If they win someone over ahead of them in the ladder, the winning boxer will climb up in the ladder above the losing boxer while the losing boxer will go down a step.

If they win someone below of them in the ladder, the winning boxer will climb up a step and the losing boxer will go down a step.

Usually, the number 1 contender has the immediate title shot against the champion. However, some sanctioning bodies have the so called "interim" or "international" champions which can have an easy ticket for fighting over the real championship belt.

But still, money talks. If the price is right, every match can made to happen. That's the work of promoters and managers.

There is no regular season for boxing, it goes 365 days a year. Someone is traditionally champion until they lose to someone else, but these days with the corrupt sanctioning bodies boxers will often lose their belts for not fighting mandatory challengers. Often these challengers are not necessarily the best fight out there for the champion, either from the competitive or financial perspective.
