As noted, Ortho Tri-Cyclen is proven to help reduce acne in females; I took it when it first came out and it did significantly help my skin. However, there are other side-effects with birth control, so I no longer take it.

You ask how many do you have to take before you see the effects? Birth control pills must be taken one per day at the same time every day for maximum efficacy. Your current pimples will take a while to fully heal, so it can take several weeks before your skin is really clear.

Accutain is a prescription drug that will clear up acne. Most medications that are used for the treatment of acne only help for the duration of time that you are taking them. Antibiotics for example will kill the bacteria that live in the excess oil, called sebum, inside your pores. Once you stop taking antibiotics however there is nothing to stop new bacteria from settling inside your pores and causing the red inflamed bumps we call pimples to reoccur. Accutain solves this problem by reducing the amount of oil (sebum) that your body produces, therefore eliminating a place for bacteria to grow. Accutain can only be prescribed by a Dermatologist, and is usually taken for six full months. During this time you will need blood drawn every month to make sure the medication is not causing harm to your liver (rare side effect, since it is somewhat difficult for the liver to process) and if you are a female you will need to be using two forms of birth control, since it may cause birth defects.
