" Graven or sculpted images of that which is in Heaven above " ??

I know the Bible says that we shouldn't do that, but I've also heard a different explanation as to why it doesn't apply. . . . . . but I can't remember it .
Do you know both explanations ??

This was before Man (Jesus ) actually went to Heaven. Before that though didn't God himself tell the Israelites to fashion the Cherubim over the Ark of the Covenant?

I just love it when people complain about Catholics and their statues and then in the next breath talk about their nativity sets. Oh , but, it's different with them because their statues in their Nativity sets are just representational things. Well what the heck do they think Catholic Statues are? Catholics do not worship or pray to statues. They are there to remind us of the people they represent, just like the other denominations say about their Nativity sets.

Dear Wishful thinker,

I believe the passage you are referencing is found in Exodus 20. The idea behind the passage is that God is so great that there is nothing we can construct that can capture His likeness. This is why when Moses asked t see God face to face, he had to hide in the cleft of a rock and God allowed Him to see his back in passing. This is why when Moses saw God's glory on the Mountain when he went to receive the 10 commandments that he came back raidiant.

I've never heard an explanation as to why it doesn't apply. But in general i think we must realize that there is nothing that we can create that can be even comprabale to God. i don't think it means that there is anything wrong with having a painting of Jesus in our midst- but just to be careful not to worship anything or to think that idols or statues, etc. have any power.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

The 2 of the 10 commadments

Exodus 20:4
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

No human effort can represent God adequately, so I dont think we should. ;-)

In the Vedic literature it is said one can worship a Deity which is made according to Scriptures and only to offer ones love and devotion. When the Bible was talking about Graven images it meant concocted images not according to scripture. We always have to consider time place and circumstance who it was being spoken to . They where worshiping false Idles fro material gain and lust. so this is forbidden. But as far as a statue of Chrish, Mary, Krishna, St. Francis, Vishnu, These are bonafide images to worship. IT is fanaticism to say all Idles are not worshipable. Also demi god worship is not recommended because people worship them as God (which they are not) and for material gain. Demi gods are Lord Shiva,Shakti, Ganesha, Indra, Chandra, Vayu, This is a type of Idle worship not recommended.
