1970's. Yuppies. American Merchants. Greed.

Christmas was originally a pagan holiday and was appropriated by Christians.

It has become secular because it's too darn fun for only the Christians and pagans to enjoy it!

It has become materialistic because we live in a capitalistic society and folks will market anything for a buck -- even plastic manger scenes to "enhance" your yard this time of year.

Who's responsible? Every person who ever bought a holiday gift for someone else.

Merry and Happy Anything and Everything!

Christmas has always been secular. History books will even tell you that.

It is only as materialistic as you make it. If you don't want a materialistic holiday, then figure out what it takes to make it non-materialistic.

It's been gradually heading in that direction over the years. Businesses began to use the Christmas season as a way to boost their bottom line. I blame the media for all the materialistic nonsense we see in the Christmas season these days.

(I'm not a Christian, but it even begins to drive me batty.)

Do you think all the movie stars and sports stars making big bucks are flaunting their wealth or are concerned with the poor? Most show off multiple expensive cars, mansions and homes, travel etc. are they secular Christians? Or is it OK for them.

Always been that way. In the history of Christmas, both Catholic and Protestant churches have banned it for being too secular at one time or another.
