Sorry to hear you're sick. Going to the doc is a good idea because they can help you sort a garden variety variety viral insult from strep throat. I'm sure you've had it done before. 5 seconds and its off to be cultured...
But in the interim, some of your other advice is good... tylenol, lots of fluids. If you're getting a lot of nasal congestion its a good idea to deal with that. The drainage is a continuing source of irritation. When I was kid my grandmother made a drink called the Bee's Knees... Its sounds like a flapper girl drink to me now in retrospect. Its equal parts honey, lemon and whiskey. Heated. Stirred. I found it helpful.
Good luck!! Hope you feel better

HOT water (tea, if you prefer). I don't take down hot water well, but it beats the pain of not being able to swallow much else. And it soothes it. I can tell you, don't OD on cough drops though, because it may make your sore throat worse. And if the swelling is too much, try an NSAID, like motrin (ibuprofen). Feel better.

I have a very similar problem...My throat started hurting on Tues of last week. I went to the doctor on fri, but he didn't help. Then, I started coughing really badly on Sunday and then I went back to the doctor on Tues. He gave me cough medicine, but it hasn't helped.....I don't have strep and you may not either. I don't know how to help though...Just rest and try not to talk and try drinking hot teas and soups....

I know this is going to sound weird, but it works to ease the pain of a soar throat. Pour some Dr. Pepper in a coffe mug and squeeze lots of fresh lemon juice in it and then microwave it so that it's hot. I thought it sounded crazy, but it worked for me. Good luck.

Sounds like strep to me...go see the Doc. He'll do a throat swab and see if it tests positive for strep. If it does, he'll give you some penicillin that will eventually clear the strep.
