Whatever you get, you should get while it is a young puppy, six to 18 weeks. They have brains like sponges when they are so young, even though they are probably not going to be learning tricks at 6 weeks. It is still a good age to get a puppy, because it will get used to your personalities faster, etc.
And also, you should be ready to give a good smack on the nose of any dog you have if it bites one of the family a little harder than it should (when being playful). It is not abuse, it is an efficient means of human/dog communication.
In my experience, Lab mixes are great all around family dogs, andShepherd Mixes have been for my family members as well. But none of those dogs were mixed with Rottweiler, Pit Bull, Boxer, Doberman Pinscher, or any other breed known for it's aggression and/or territorial violence. They were usually Lab/Shepherd, Shepherd/Chow, or Shepherd/Collie.
Of course, if you don't need a large protector type dog, but rather just a nice friendly dog that will make noise when there is an intruder, a short-legged Jack Russell Terrier is wonderful. They are nippy if the kids get too aggravating, but the kids will learn when to quit torturing it.

i would recomend shelties. We just got our second one 2 years ago such wonderful dogs. Our first one was full size and she always slept with the kids and made sure they were alright and the one we have now is a small size and gets up about ever 2 hours and walks around the house to make sure everyone is alright. If you do get one though you'll have to groom them at least once a week.
I would not recomend a golden retriever with kids. Often times goldens are very protective with their food.

I would recommend a golden retreiver they are amazing with children, are not overly hyper, generaly well behaves, and very social, loyal, yet great watch dogs at the same time. If you go to goolge and type in dog temperments there will be tons of facts there on dogs.

Any dog can make a great house pet, it depends on the individual. I'm hoping the "large lawn" is fenced. Why don't you check out a local shelter or rescue. If you get a higher enegry dog, they'll need alot of exercise.

if you are looking for a family pet then the golden retriever is the best breed for a family, they are not mean, aggressive, or tempermental. they are the most devoted dgs for the family and they are willing to please you. i own and breed the golden retrievers and i would not ask for another breed. i have a litter of pups right now and they are loads of fun. but if you are looking for a breed for the family then get a golden retriever you will not be sorry, you will be happy with the choice you make.

A YORKIE OR SHIH-TZU! i have a male&female yorkie & 1 male shih-tzu they are easy to maintain very low shedding & great with kids not to mention sooo adorable! If you have kids get a puppy so the dog will learn to love kids (can't teach an old dog knew tricks anyway)
*take your new puppy out often to avoid accidents & learn quick*

Labrador Retrievers are the best with children. My nieces crawl all over my black lab and she loves the attention.

No contest.... Get a female lab. Smart, great with kids, easily trainable. Yes, difficult as a pup, but aren't they all? You CANNOT go wrong with a lab
