First it isn't a disease, it is a disorder. And it isn't an allergy either.

Bipolar Disorder is a very serious condition in which the person experiences unusually intense cycles of clinical depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states. The disorder can cause great distress among those afflicted and those living with them. Bipolar disorder can be a disabling condition, with a higher-than-average risk of death through suicide. Bipolar disorder can vary in severity and affect people differently. There are many very high functioning bipolar people of above average creativity, and also those with life threatening depression symptoms.

Bipolar disorder (also called manic-depressive disorder) is an illness that causes extreme mood changes that alternate between manic episodes of abnormally high energy and the extreme lows of depression.

Bipolar disorder may cause behavior so severe that you may not be able to function at work, in family or social situations, or in relationships with others. Some people with bipolar disorder become suicidal

bipolar disease is actually no longer called bipolar disease....sufferers are now referred to as manic depressive...this pretty acurately describes the illness...my daughter has been diagnosed with it and now with the right mixture of meds is doing great and is a junior in high school....

with manic depressive syndrome patients will go from being very depressed to being so manic at times they cant be controlled....when my daughter had manic outbreaks she would be like a pinball bouncing off walls and so hyper i thoguht she would explode....its like all or nothing with the emotions....they are one minute very high loud and giddy and then there are days spent in a blue funk that seems irreversible...

now with the right meds she is on an even keel and able to control the feelings that she faces
