I too am overweight and have 4 herniated disc's and arthritis in my lower back, which causes me to have great pain down my left leg into my left hip that includes extreme burning, I believe that this condition was brought on by a horrible fall I had outside our house. As I already know that being overweight is not helping the matter any. I have started with my Primary Care Physician and then to a Spinal Surgeon who has sent me to the Pain Management Center, at this point if you are having great pain which is caused by inflammation of the nerves due to pressure from the disc's or as I am having and arthritis, I suggest that you talk to your Dr. about the Drug Lyrica which is what I am on, I don't know what your situation is and I would not wish this condition on my worst enemy, but a regiment of the following pills have helped my WALK again (though it's not for a great amount of time in a normal position but I am walking) 1. Diclofenac/ Anti-inflammatory 2. Lyrica 3. Lore tab, though I also add Paxil in there due to the pain factor and how it takes it toll mentally as well as physically.

I hope that this has helped.

Yes, being overweight can put extra pressure on your back. You should try to strengthen your abdominal muscles. Muscles work with and against each other in groups. You need to be strong in front to support your back.
