Karma has many levels of meaning. It was put forth to counter the idea that nothing is real, that all is an illusion, i.e. don't step in front of a moving bus, or you reap what you sow. As you go deeper, it raises questions about motivation for behavior, such as what causes suffering and what produces a good life. Then it goes deeper to consider the ethics of behavior, positive and negative. Then it goes to consider that no behavior or result from it is permanent, so what is the purpose of trying to follow one or the other, as in many believed in reincarnation, and so felt they could have a better next life if they were good in this one. Finally, you get to consider your self, as in if there is no behavior or result that is permanent, what does that say about your self, is it permanent, or is it also a temporary result of your temporary behavior. If you go into that energetically, you can use this idea to see that conditioning is not permanent, that your behavior is not written in stone, that your fate is free and can go in any direction. Therefore, ultimately Karma is not real in the sense that there is no force determining your life. You can step out of your self and your Karma at any time.

The concept of Karma is just another of mankinds many attempts at aspiring to be his own god.
The belief that we could somehow with enough attempts aspire to reach Salvation based solely upon our own performance is the ultimate lack of the Humility and surrender it actually takes to simply accept Jesus Christs free gift of Grace, Love and Eternal Life through what He did rather than anything within our own power.

Karma has been misinterpreted and misused and made into some mystical force or process. Karma is simply conditioning. It means that if I abuse my kids or teach them to be racist, that their worldview and perceptions will result in their lives being less than ideal - they will suffer (e.g. if I abuse them, they may be dysfunctional, etc.). This lasts lifetimes because we see negative dynamics being passed down from generation to generation. And 'good' karma is just good conditioning -- we become aware of our negative dynamics and we overcome them, we do something kind for someone and this makes them see that we're all in this together, etc.

Seems obvious. If you're one to throw garbage out of your car window then you live in a world with litter along the freeways. If you're one to pick up litter when you see it on the street then the world's a bit cleaner place than it would otherwise be.

Yes, I believe so. Karma simply means that if you put good into the system then you will get good back, and if you put bad in then you will get bad back...
