Everywhere I search on the web about it I see links concerning 'correction of errors' regarding it. So is it notoriously rubbish or something? I also see that there was some kind of lawsuit last year and Microsoft were going to 'withdraw support' for it or some such thing-So what exactly is the story?

ActiveXs are a kind of programs that runs on the back of other programs, like Internet Explorer, and Windows system programs. They were originally designed as Microsoft's response to Java. ActiveX components can be extremely dangerous because the designers have put no restrictions on its destructive capability like the developers of Java did with their "Sandbox" technology. For this reason Netscape refused to allow the use of ActiveX with their browser.

An ActiveX code can format your drive, modify files as it pleases, change security settings, modify windows registry - among other things. A maliciously written ActiveX component (called so because they belong to the component class) can do any amount of damage imaginable, including change the desktop linking it to a particular and lock it so no one can change, drop viruses, steal passwords, steal info from your system. I even seen one running a p2p system from a console it hijacked.

The best thing would be to avoid it at all costs.

Active X is part of Microsoft's browser software interface. It allows websites to run programs in your browser. It is often buggy and causes crashes because some sites have poorly written code. It's a problem that will be there for a long time and we are forced by Microsoft to accept this for now until they work on fixing it. Good luck!
