My last dog Jess, we had wormed at the vet. It cost a lot of money. (As vets do) Our new puppy is two months old and has not been treated yet. The supermarket worming treatments are at a fraction of the price.

THEY ARE CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is WHY they are so cheap!!! And you can't get a Heartworm preventitive from anyone BUT the vet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Supermarket wormers are ineffective at best. They can also make your pet ill or worse can kill it.
As far as heartworm treatment goes, your vet can start heartworm preventative now. No test required. After six months of age a test will be required to be sure heartworm isn't already present.
It takes 6 months for adult worms to develop, heartworm preventative won't kill adult worms and can actuallly complicate matters if they are present.
If you aren't willing to put forth the money to properly care for your pet, why did you get one?

Heartworm Prevention is only available through a licensed Veterinarian, it cannot be purchased in the supermarket and to be purchased online, you will need a perscription from your vet. You should also have your pup dewormed by your vet and avoid the over the counter medications as they are not as safe as what your vet would use.

You do not need to use OTC products as you may be treating for something the pup doesn't have. She needs to have her shots anyway and yes, they are costly, but that goes along with owning a puppy. Heartworm, which I think she is too young to have MUST be diagnosed with a blood test and MUST be treated (if positive) by a vet. Test the pup at about 8 months. If negative, put puppy on HW preventative. All puppies need their puppy shots, just like babies do when they get here. The last shot is rabies, given about 5- months of age (after all puppy shots are done) Save your money and take care of the puppy,

The vet preps are much better. Also there are different kinds of worms and your vet can diagnose and treat the right kind of worms. Don't use the supermarket or pet store brands.

I don't think you can get heartworm from a supermarket, I think it is a perscription thing, the regular wormers do something different. I know that the flea and tick stuff does not do as well. When I am in the city, I use the over the counter dtuff, but when we go to the country, I use the stuff from the vets.

But when it doesnt work and you are attached to your dog and you end up having to pay for heart worm treatment - it will cost you alot more. Theres a reason the vet sells stuff there, its like you getting an antibiotic from a doctor instead of going to Walgreens and finding something that you HOPE will work : )

first of all you cannot purchase heartworm medication at the grocery store. It is a prescription product. Second of all the intestinal dewormer you get at the store will only take care of a small number of the intestinal parasites your dog could have. So if you don't know what type of intestinal parasite your dog has and you deworm using a grocery store brand you may be wasting your money and time.

NO! Heartworms and intestinal parasites can kill your dog and what you find at the supermarkets have nowhere near the strength of your vet's formulas.

For the heartworming you need to go to the vet. FOr roundworms etc. if it has pyrantel pomoate in it it is the same thing as the vets (worked in a vet clinic) also for the most part vets recommend the safeguard and pancur.
