answering the who believes part: only people who can't read or who so mistrust science that they refuse to believe anything but the bible (and biblical scholars, paradoxically).

As to where they get that nonsense, well, that'd be those bible scholars. Strangely I suspect those same scholars may in many cases be more open to other theories (evolution!) than they're given credit for. After all, it's one thing to read the bible and infer from all the details there that genesis must have described a date 4600 years ago; it's quite another to believe that is a true account of the time since creation.

I am a "bible person" (I'm a Catholic Christian). I personally believe in evolution and that the earth is older than 6,000 years old, but I believe that God had a hand in it. I have no problem whatsoever with the theories scientists come up with, as long as they do not deny that God created the world. Notice I didn't say instantaneously. If there was a "big bang" then I believe that God somehow had a hand in it.

I think it's "crap" NOT to believe in God. There's an EXCELLENT
DVD out that is purely scientific--no religion at all. Many lead scientists are now doubting that the world formed through chance alone. They are comming to this understanding by studying the simplest lifeforms (if you can call them simple) on earth.

It is called "Unlocking the Mystery of Life." Please check it out. It will be worth your time and is only 65 minutes.

According to fundies, the universe is about 6000 years old, which means the light from the stars less than halfway across our own galaxy should not be visible yet. Every night new stars should appear in the sky as their light finally reaches earth and the light from the nearest galaxy to ours (Andromeda) should not arrive for another almost 2.2 million years. These fundies should be kept away from all children.

Its funny they didn't even GET the nonsense all they did was get a 2k+ year old hand me down idea, from a printed paper that comes to together to form a book, but I found why one particular person worships god and follows Jesus like a sheep. I asked why did he believe it, Believe it or not he said and I quote " I'd rather take the easier way" That should be the answer to to your rhetorical question. he he

Yes, there is a "Young Earth" movement out there. They even have rafting on several large canyon rivers to show folks how God did all that laying of strata in a day or two. It is a sad statement on the state of scientific education in this country. (Yes, there are VERY FEW "Young Earthers" outside of the U.S.)

I just can't believe there are wacky lunatic creationists that claim something that even they know isn't true. A mere book claims no authority, less one that's been edited so many times.

"That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand." 2 Thessalonians 2:2

Here's an update then. People can almost prove that what happened years ago in history and stuff, like how the declaration of independence happened, what it actually looked like, or who really discovered the US, but people can disprove that, too. NO ONE knows if the Bible is the truth, so that means we can't disprove it.

it is quite ridiculous and sad, really. considering the fact that the bulk of micro- and cell biology, behavioral sciences, botany, oceanography, geology, etc. etc. etc. are all predicated upon the knowledge that the Earth is billions of years old.

i think that people should be able to believe whatever crackpot theories they like to, but they need to keep their mythology out of our science and our classrooms.
