Why does it seem like Christians are WAY more offended by something that says Jesus did exist, but not in the traditional way, than they do about movies and writings that say He never existed.
I've read fictional books that said we were created by aliens, by dragons. That the ark was a spaceship and noah was an alien. But in the Davinci Code, people are throwing a fit about the idea that he MIGHT have had a wife. Did he? Does it even MATTER!? Was he less of a Savior to the world if he was a husband and father?
My other question, doesn't the church realize that it is its own worst enemy as far as this stuff goes? Is this narrow minded all knowing perspective the one God wants people to have? Why do people tell me God is a mystery and they'll have so many questions for HIm, then act like the KNOW Jesus wasn't married even though it didn't say he wasn't?

Yes, I understand that it's fiction, as does everyone else. However, doesn't that make it even MORE STUPID that there's such a hissy fit going on?

Actually, I don't understand why Christians would throw a fit about any novel. It's just a novel.
Actually, I enjoy hearing the secular world discussing Jesus, about whether he could have been married, what he really came for, did he really die at the cross, what it was all about - opens doors for great conversations, and some people might actually seek the truth. So while there is no reason for a novel like that to bother us, on the other hand it can do a lot of good, even if unintentionally.
Like the controversy over the Passion of Christ. When some silly people suggested it was antisemitic, and others that it should be x rated because of the violent scenes. I heard talk shows on the radio actually discussing those questions, and, once again, why Jesus died.
We Christians should concentrate on living out our faith and sharing it with those who want to hear, rather than start crusades every time someone makes a non-christian sounding hiccup.

According to Jewish culture there would have been no problem for Jesus to marry and have a family. And I see no reason why that would pose a problem to his dvinity. Where the problem does lie is in the historical evidence for such a claim. There is none. Dan Brown based his fantasy of a married Jesus on the pseudo gospel of Phillip. In that letter, which even liberal scholars have agreeed was not written by Phillip, there is a section that has been damaged and is unreadable. The text reads thus, "And the companion of the [...] Mary Magdalene. [...] her more than [...] the disciples [...] kiss her [...] on her [...]." The brackets indicate missing words because the manuscript is damaged. Dan Brown displays horrible scholarship by inserting the word LIPS to suggest Jesus kissed Mary on the lips. But those words are not actually there! It might just as well say he used to kiss her on the forehead! This is what makes me angry! People are so desperate to discredit the story of Jesus they will blatantly lie about historical facts to accomplish their agenda. At least Dan Brown could be intellectually honest and say he prefers to believe Jesus married Mary even though the evidence does not suggest that. I could handle that. I cannot handle lying, and that is exactly what Dan Brown has done. So you need to understand the reasons for believing Jesus was not married go FAR beyond "it didnt say he wasn't?" as you said. It is not narrow mindedness it is careful mindedness. By the way, God is very narrow minded. He is the truth and there is no other truth. You are also narrow minded by scolding all those people who hold a different opinion from yours. Everyone is narrow minded. The only significant question is whose narrow way is the right way? the historical evidence strongly favors the young Jewish man who lived 2000 years ago.

Dear Daniel R,
The Da Vinci Code proposes the idea first that Jesus had a secret affair with his mother Mary and that they may even had a child together.
This would make Jesus first of all guilty of sin. i don't think we even need to argue that someone having a child with their own mother is wrong. It also is not supported historically and the whole "Conspiracy" suggests that the church has hidden that from the world- which also implies that the church has hid many things from the world. Obviously there are no perfect churches but to suggest that the church is an evil institution with an agenda to hide lies about Jesus is quite an uproar.
Dan Brown himself has said that this is a fictional account. Yet many have ran with his fiction and began to take it as fact (when there is no historical evidence to support it).
The big deal is that if these fictional theories are true- Jesus is not who he claims to be. If he lies about one thing- why should we believe His claim to be the Mesiah of the world.
Yes, DaVinci Code is not as bad as other literature but that does not mean the implications that are being suggested here are not important.
There is no historical evidence to support the idea that Jesus was married, so to say that people don't know that as a fact is preposterous. God has revealed Himself through the Bible and we are not to go and make up stuff about Him and think that is OK and acceptable.
Hope that helps. Kindly,
Nickster

BRAVO! Now there is something that was extremely well said. I am catholic. I love my religion, but the one thing (the only thing) that is really upsetting to me is how the church can have such tunnel vision. Sometimes I wonder if the Church knows a lot more than than the rest of us, but if they let it out their members would be more disillusioned and would move away from the church. I also sometimes think that there would never be anything wrong if it was found that Jesus had taken a wife. How are we to know anyway since this was something that happened to so long ago. I think you have a valid point though. It wouldn't have made him less of a savior of man if he had. To be honest...Jesus died for our sins yes...but in the eyes of the church to marry someone is not a sin. If there wasn't a marriage then it would be. So if the church knows that he took a wife wouldn't that be more ammunition to its members that they could use that marriage is something sacred...and use the example of Jesus being married. So bravo again for a good point. It was something that I had thought about too as well.

No, this would not make Him any less the Savior of the world but the DaVinci Code is FICTION. I cannot comprehend how many times this will need to be said before people finally understand that it is true.

I agree. That was a fictional book. When I went to church they asked me to join the rally against it. I was shocked they would do such a thing. I mean they did not have a protest to SAW or Hostel. They then told me those movies are unrealistic. That the Divinci Code is a threat to the lost people. Then they asked me again. I replied no I would not be going with them, I would be to busy watching the movie.

Well as I see it, its like, its ok if you dont acknowledge my mother exists but dont dare acknowledge her and lie about her. Im personally not offended by the Di Vinci code because even if Jesus did have a child it wouldnt make any difference. But people are willing to believe it just because its different from what they've been told.
If we could use the "my mother" example one more time?
Someone says "Your mother had children she never told you about" this isnt cool but you can say "yeah right" and move on... but then when other people start believing it and they come to you "Since its been proven your mother had children she never told you about... are you going to try to meet them??" Id get a little bent out of shape. Well, I think its the same kind of thing when considering the Di Vinci code.

not buying into the whole da vinci code- it is fiction, remember that peoples
But what i am guessing is that the bible, since it has many many interpretations could infact be a story that covers the truth of the situation, who knows what the actual facts were, and i am guessing we will never know till it is all over and done.

I am offended by something that poses as truth when it is fiction. I am not offended by anything that states it is fiction.
EDIT:
If Jesus was married we would know it. Peter was married we know that, and His wedding wasn't the wedding of canan.
Paul wasn't married, neither was Jesus.
