How common is bleeding on the brain in preemies.... ? What causes it? Does it just go away on it's own? My niece was born 12 weeks early & is doing really really well, but they said yesterday that they've found some slight bleeding on the brain. Thank you :)

I want to thank everyone for their explanations and stories, they have all been helpful. I am leaving monday to visit my sister & my new little niece on Monday, and just wanted a little more info before I get there since I just don't want to stress my sister out any more than she already is with my endless questions :) Thanks!

Hi there...
I have 8 1/2 month old twin boys, who were also born 12 weeks early, 28 weeks gestation...
The "brain bleeds" are technically/medically ...IVH - Intraventricular hemorrhage...and please tell your brother/sister, who this may be, it is VERY common..I know that is so hard to comprehend when it is your poor little baby, my boys did not have one but they told me to expect one, and the fact that they didn't was very uncommon.

I am in several preemie suport groups, and most of the children do get them. They have different grades, depending on the severity of the bleed. Most will clear up, when the baby ages he/she matures and so do the vessels that cause the bleeds in the brain, most don't cause delays...it depends on the grade.

I know this is an incredibly stressful time, with the baby in the NICU, and it is terrible hearing all these terms...I am on Myspace...ask your brother/sister if she has that, or maybe she could set it up, its free and there are several preemie support groups, I am on there, and you can see the success of my boys...tell her to search my name Carriss....you can also go on there for information...Also, the march of dimes official website is a great place to learn preemie information as well as there support group.

Good Luck, these little babies are strong!!! I hope your little niece pulls through strong, I'm sure she will....feel free to email me with any additional ?'s

Carriss,
:)

I think Caris has pretty much answered your question but I just wanted to add our experience of brain bleeding.
My son was 16 weeks early and suffered a grade 4 IVH, grade 4 is the worst kind. When the areas it damages die off and fill with fluid and it is these cysts that are picked up on a second scan. We were told that our son had extensive damage and would most likely have severe cerebal palsy.
He never showed any signs of brain damage and months later a third scan was done.
This scan showed absolutely no sign of any damage, his brain had healed itself!!

If an adult suffers damage to the brain it is pretty much permenant. But these babies are still developing. Even if damage is sustained the messages in the brain can reroute themselves so instead of going straight from a to b the message can go different way round.

These kids are very resilient!!

Find out the medical term for that condition, log onto WebMD using the sign in process to sign as a medical professional.
Then look up this condition. If the medical jargon is too much for you, then use the medical term and go to Ask.com or even Google. You can go to sites that are set up to support parents of such infants, or Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, & other medical institutions that cater to this need.Another thought would be to ask a NICU (Neo-natal Intensive Care) Nurse to educate you or refer you to info. either on line or in a hospital's good medical library.
Read a lot of different sites, as some will likely have misinformation.
You can also do this looking with "premature infant complications" as a term
Best of luck to you, just don't give up, the info. is out there.
