I've sometimes made that comment myself, but I realized that I should be asking myself what I'm doing with my assets. That's what I'm responsible for.
Some individuals and groups in the Catholic church are very sacrificial, and can put any one of us to shame.
But it's easier for me to sit and look at all the assets of the vatican and think what good they could do with it, than to open my own wallet and bank account to those who are in need.

If the United States spent all it's money on food for the poor instead of on fighting wars, they could feed millions.
The first problem might just be where are they going to grow it?
As far as the "Vatican treasures" many of these are priceless objects that desparately need care and are treasures not only of the Vatican, but the entire world. Things such as Davinci's notebooks, wonderful works of art and the like.
Selling these objects would mean that many of them would have to go to private collectors as other museums would run out of money trying to buy them. Afterward, there is no guarantee that they would be properly cared for as this takes even more money. Where they are, they are being cared for properly.
The Catholic church is probably the world leader in feeding the poor and caring for the needy. In my town, there is Catholic schooling for Kindergarden through High School. There is an elderly care facility. In the next town to the north, there is a Catholic orphanage and a grade school. There is also a counseling center. All of the Catholic churches in my area contribute to the local soup kitches and food pantries. In my state, one of the leading hospitals is a Catholic hospital, with the undisputed best heart care around. It's where my mother had her Aortic Valve replaced a few years ago.
Please don't confuse what an organization has and what they do. It's like complaining that Great Britain doesn't sell the Crown Jewels to feed the hungry; some things need to be cared for simply for historical reasons. It's a problem that can be handled by the generosity of people such as you and me rather than bartering history for a few meals.

The Catholic Church is the largest Charitable organization in the world and it does not cost an arm and a leg for administration fees like United Way and even the Red Cross or most of the others. Why don't you talk about some of the other huge endeavors going on today in the Religious World? I'll tell you why because the Evil One has really nothing to fear with them but the Catholic Church ... aw ... Here is something he would really love to destroy .....

The US spent about twenty Billion dollars on ice cream one of these past years. that's also the same amount of money scientists estimate it would cost to give all of Africa clean water. It's not just Catholics-it's the rest of Christians and it's the rest of the world.
