If you were an only child, how do you think it affected your life?

I have older brothers but they all left home by the time I was 8 and moved out of state so I practically grew up as an only child.
I think I missed out on having someone to do things with and someone to shift my parent's attention away from me.
It benefited me by having more material things and not having to share a bedroom or bathroom.
When you grow up without siblings you can't regent or miss something you never had, but when you have siblings you have other people in your life to share experiences with.
Honestly I think it all has to do with how good the parents are if the child is affected or not. I grew up really shy not because I didn't have siblings around to socialize with, but because my parents caused me to be that way. This happens to people with siblings also.

being an only child myself, i think it has been one of the greatest things to happen to me. I've always been an only child, and for awhile i hated it. But, now, i love having the house to myself when my parents are gone, there is no one around to bug me and I've grown close relationships with my cousins that I would not have had if i had a sibling. My parents have a great amount of trust for me, but i know my cousins' parents don't. They compare their kids to each other. It's nice being able to be independent and an individual. I make my own path, I don't have to live up to anyone (I do carry an A- average), but it's nice not having to hear "If you worked harder like your sister...".

Yes, they miss that they don't have another sibling to look up to and they feel lonely when they are older and have to stay at home by themselves when their parents are out of the house
