Wow, are you confused yet? John of Patmos was given a Revelation--a showing of what would (could?) come. Some see it as an absolute foretelling of the future, others as a commentary on religion and politics of the time. Either way, it was written in the form of prophecy. Readers of that time would understand the ancient tradition of prophetic writings (Daniel, for instance). Prophecy wasn't some vague futuristic thing, but was based on the current situation that readers would understand. So prophecy always was rooted in history, but always was forward-looking.

Revelations means to reveal. In the book they we're visions that was seen through the eyes of an Apostle of things to come. So I would say it's more of a prohecy. but technically it does not have to mean the end of the world. In my opinion the bible is a mystery with puzzles and clues what you read in Revelations might actually mean something else. Like the beasts for instances might mean the powerful countries that will rule or is ruling the planet today or tommorrow. Study carefully. The real true end of the world is revealed in Matthews, when jesus explains the things to come and his second coming.

History. It was intended as a way to help give spiritual support to Christians during Roman persecution. 666 was Nero Caesar. It was not intended to be some end-times prediction.
