Bactrim is very effective against community acquired MRSA.
Even if it is (ask your doctor), as long as you're reasonably healthy, you should be okay.

Listen to your doctor, not a boyfriend's mother for accurate info.

Your boyfriend's mom a doctor? No need to answer that, it was a rhetorical question to make a point ;)

If it was MRSA then you'd be on some heavier guns than that. Those antibiotics would not even touch MRSA.

In addition, your doctor would have known from the culture if it was MRSA and would have given you instructions so that you don't spread it.

If it was flesh eating disease he would have sliced ya open to look for tunneling, clean out necrosis, etc.

If you're ever going to have a successful relationship with this boy, you need to stop listening to his mother. Seriously, this woman read something somewhere and has no business giving medical advice.

Speaking of which, these questions should really be directed towards your doctor. Take care and hope you have a speedy recovery.

TMP/SMX is a pretty strong drug. It is effective against a number of infections, however it has a fairly large number of side effects, some of them serious which limits its use. It is primarily used for a particular type of pneumonia caused by P. carinii and also for urinary tract infections. It can be used for other infections also, and there was probably a reason your doctor used it specifically, and that reason isn't necessarily that it is MRSA. Usually a first line drug for MRSA is vancomycin, not TMP/SMX.
