put the tip of your finger in front of his eyes, about 12 inches away-then have him slowly follow your finger, with his eyes only, to the side of his face (as if looking out the side of his eyes), without moving his head, if his eyes quiver (spasm), it is more than likely he's ridin' the horse.

Well I am the person to answer this. My father was a heroin addict and died two years ago from an overdose. First of all, a user will always nod off, as the drug has a high sedative effect. They will also become emaciated to the point of protruding ribs if the addiction is bad enough. Look for needle marks on the elbow or on the hands. A heroin habit is very expensive, so they'll probably be broke and need to borrow money in even increments (20 bucks, forty, and up). When they do not have the drug, they are extremely irritable and cranky and physically ill if they are addicted. Heroin can be snorted or injected, so look for spoons and syringes. Heroin has a brownish color, a tar-like substance before it is cooked and injected. BUT, the main quality of heroin use is that it is a downer, people get very sleepy and calm on it.

There are lots of things to look out for, but dont assume if you notice one of them relate to your friend that she is an addict.
Here are some of the things that would be obvious in any heroin user, especially addicts.

Changes in appetite - Heroin addicts tend to opt for sweeter foods, and eat much less than they used to before taking the drug.
Constant need to visit the bathroom.
It affects the brain really quickly, so changes in behaviour should be easy to notice.
People on heroin get cramps in lots of places, they are prone to fever, you find lots of people using the drug shake or shiver a lot, and feel cold a lot of the time. Users of heroin are also very restless. They don't sleep that much but can feel very tired. They become easily confused and disorientated and they can vomit a lot too.
If your friend is a male (as this isnt that comman in women users) you may notice they become more sexually active, or crave or want sex more than they used to. You'll find they often talk about sex.
If your friend IS on heroin, please support him and try to make sure he gets the help he needs to stop.
Hope this helped you a little bit.

Check for needle marks on his arm. If he has experienced a sharp drop in his weight, that's also another likely symptom. Heroin addicts have mood swings and hallucination all the time. Check for that as well. Very often, he will also have runny nose and display shifty behaviour.

NOTE: You can't always just look for needle marks because Heroin can also be sniffed instead of injected.

I truly hope your friend is not using this drug because it is VERY dangerous.

They nod off constantly, talk with their eyes shut (as if sleepy), pupils will be EXTREMELY constricted.

When they're going through withdrawal they will exhibit signs of the flu along with being antsy and agitated. Asking for cash, selling things etc is a good tip off as well.

I agree with all the above but I will add that they will sometimes absent mindedly scratch at their chest, neck and face. Occasionally there may be a bluish tint to their lips. Sometimes a whiny and scratchy/gravely voice.

How about just asking him? You don't have to be confrontational, but why speculate. He may be quite flattered that you care about him....good luck
