That is one of the highest stress areas in medicine. Here the doctors often have to work extremely long shifts, until all the patients are settled or dealt with. Forget a social life! I have a friend who started out in emergency med, he has now moved into surgery, which is more like a 9-5 job and better for him and his young family.

If you are interested in medicine, then start by taking college classes such as medical terminology, biology, chemistry, & pre-calculus.
If you find these classes interesting, take it a step further by calling a local hospital or clinic to request a day to observe for a day. Speak directly to either Human Resources or Volunteer Services. Stop by any medical facility and just ask to chat / interview an employee about their particular medical field. Search the web for medical job profiles & various educational programs. The medical field is an endless list of opportunity and you will be guaranteed a job anywhere in the country once you've finished your education. Good Luck!

If you like a lot of stress and long hours, go into emergency medicine. It can be highly unpredictable and fast paced, yet boring and dragged out at the same time. I was thinking of being an emergency room nurse, but after briefly experiencing it, I realized it wasn't for me. I want something with a little more stability. I found Neurosurg and Cardiology very interesting...try that if you'd like!

dont go into emergency medicine. Do you really want to have someone else's life in your hands. I would recommend studying psychoactives, such as the amines. Thats what i plan on doing. Nothing in the whole world is more interesting, IMO.
Look up phenethylamines and tryptamines. I dare you to say they arent interesting.

Perhaps dermatology? It seems to be in high demand these days. Plus, treat melanoma cancer is considered emergency medicine.

You will definitely know by the time you finish med school and internship!!! I would definitely not worry about it now. Worry about making straight A's since grade school and all through college. Never make a B.
