I think it's two things.
It's an insecurity in their own beliefs, as though something someone else believes would destroy their own faith. If there were another "truth" then theirs would not be "the" truth, would it? The old "there can be only one" idea. Life is too complex if there is more than one possible truth for them.
It is also too much like work. They would have to actually think, for themselves even. Why bother when someone else can tell you "the truth" and you can deny any other truth as valid based on it's coming from a divine source.
As someone else said, it is their nature. And I like the way you worded your question - fundamentalists of any religion - and than can include individual spiritual paths.

woo that's deep question. 1 possibility comes to mind that I have thoroughly thought through. This person is basically a mindless automaton that cannot think for them self, a person without a conscience in other words. Which then takes the road to laziness and dependence on the group mind which this "thing" has joined. They spat what they heard from others in this cult. Never from what they found out for themselves. Which is of course full circle to the problem in the first place. Its not unusual its just how the gaia gene swarm works. Its has its pros and of course cons. This doesn't just apply to mindless religious fanatics, this applies to whole bunch of crap on the wall, Like Military loving fan boys, and government arsekissing. Which there only source of information which of course is plague by "biased media shows" and yada yada. Its just a total lack individualism, but like I say its not bad thing it will be good if it will "help" everyone, Not exploit and destroy and kill but actually assist people. Im not referring to religion. Thats a brutal killer. No matter how you look at it.

As you said "of any religion" because even atheists do it... some not all. There are hard heads on any side who dont believe anything unless their favorite verse, book, author, scientist, pastor, or doctor says so.
I admit I do this too even though I consider myself open minded. Recently I was in a discussion with another Christian here on a subject we disagreed on. I told him I chose to trust what the Bible says about the subject, and he chose to trust what an "athority" said the Bible meant about the subject. I'll listen, and I find other beliefs very interesting but I dont want to spend a lot of time on a topic I dont believe anyway... think we all do that.

not really sure I think it comes into the way they were brought up and the way they choose to live the, literal interpretaion of just about any relgious text would result in violent actions to non believers , theres many reason but you are certainly right if people done a bit of reasearch from both historical and theosphoical point of view there would be no need to argue over religion at all because then everyone would realise its only trying to achieve a peaceful harmonious world for us all.. and that is the goal of every relgion

As in any cult, it would be going against what you believe and taught. As in mine is right and yours is wrong simple as that.
The sad thing is I think away, people are living a lie that was set up to protect the Kings and priest, people these day don't see that because they think religion has a simple place in society, but that's not true their role is very complex and there allies are disguises. Two very good example of many I have found, what would happen to the claim the Israelites claim that god gave them a country and what about the ten commandments, if 90% of the people said there is no god,

Many people have and are fully aware of similarities, but they are also aware of differences. To follow blindly is not next to Godliness. Any responsible religious member does do research, but as with anything, there are those who do not.

Well I like to consider myself a fundamentalist. A fundamentalist is one who follows the "traditional principles (fundamentals) upon which something was founded".... In that sense, I would rather be a Christian following the teaching of 33AD instead of a Christian following 1700AD or a modern televangelist. The religious-right and me used to be buddies until I began researching a lot, then I realized they were not at all what I would call "fundamentalists" but instead I would call them........... political goons.

What is not to understand? They have a monopoly on truth based on a book written long ago by men who thought the world was flat and disease is caused by demons. Not only that, they believe it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their superstitious beliefs down every ones throat. We just have to marginalize them, which may mean an all out war against institutionalized stupidity.

You will most likely get the answer ,"The bible says to not surround yourself with people who are not of the same faith as it will lead to confusion." And while this is true if you are not firmly rooted in your faith, I think it does not apply to a mature Christian. Jesus himself walked among the non-believers and sinners as they were the ones who needed it most. More Christians should follow the example he set as to how a true Christian should act and quit following the misguided interpretations of the "spiritual" leaders. Many of whom do nothing more than pay lipservice to the doctrine they espouse while happily going out doing that which they profess to despise.

i LOVE to explore different religions!!! it is one of my favorite topics! i am a non-denominational christian, but it doesnt mean that i dont listen to other people! and yes... there tend to be alot of similarities among different religions because things like love and humanity make religion work! but there is one thing that always comes up different when you compare different religions to Christianity as the bible has it. and that is that in other religions you have the capability to earn your way to heaven.... you need to do something ... help someone... do a good deed. but according to the bible... the only way you can go to heaven is by forgivness through the Lord Jesus Christ. your good works are worth nothing without christ just like you cant clean yourself w/o water. have you ever put soap on your body then couldnt wash it off??? its nasty! the same holds true when you try and earn your way to heaven. it is all in vain.
