The crunch machine in reverse,at a high setting, with your feet held firm in the back.Make sure to keep your back straight and your arms behind your head with each repetition...By flexing your abs and lower back muscles you strengthen the core of the body which in my opinion is the most important part.

what part of the back? if u mean lower back - lie on ur stomach and raise ur shoulders and upper torso off the floor, then ease back down. if you mean upper back - this area is very hard to isolate without machiines or free weights.
