You have a good question. I have 2 yorkies. My first one I let sleep with me from the time I got him. I didnt crush him at all. The second one I tried kennel training so It would make potty training easier. It worked for potty training, but i felt like my furbaby and I werent bonding like my other pup and I had, so now she sleeps with me and I put a diaper on her incase of mistakes. She is only 6 months old. At first my older Yorkie didnt like her sleeping with us, but now he has adapted to her. be prepared for a little jealousness at first from your older pup.

The new puppy needs to sleep in a crate. She also needs to stay in the crate while everyone is away from home. This will help her learn not to potty in the house. When she gets a little older and potty trained, then she can sleep in bed with you.

The crate should be big enough for the puppy to comfortably move around but not so big that she can potty at one end and sleep at the other. However, we've crate trained two Golden Retriever puppies and we just got the large sized crate because we knew they'd be getting pretty big. They did potty in their crates a few times but still learned quickly. Make sure you go outside with her every time and offer lots of praise and a treat when she goes.

Oh is this the question for me. I have a two year old black lab shepherd mix. We allowed him to sleep in the bed with us (up by our heads) as soon as we got him (10 weeks). We did not have a crate available. If you choose to do this method be prepared to get up every hour to let the dog out. We jumped every time the puppy moved, afraid it would use the bathroom on the bed. Also be prepared to break the dog of the habit, as depending on the breed space becomes limited. We just got a puppy whom is being crate trained and it is much easier, and we get a lot more sleep!

It depends on the dog. Some dogs need more structure and reminding who the dog is, some just seem to know. I have a pet oriented household so they are allowed everywhere except the kitchen counters and kitchen table (referring to my cats). My dog is about 9 yr old, he's a cocker spaniel/chow mix and he's got that part of a chow that is almost like a jealous boyfriend (we have an ongoing joke about that) - doesn't want anyone around, wants to know everything you do, and if you're not home on time he starts pacing in front of the door. At bedtime he gets in bed for a few minutes (always facing the door though), then once I'm settled in, he gets down and sleeps at the doorway. I think in a lot of ways it does allow a dog to be a dog because he assuming his role as protector of the house.

Your other dog might not allow the pup up there for a while. The pup is too young anyway. It has much to learn and needs to grow. I would wait until the pup is old enough to jump up on its own. By then it will be socialized with your older dog and able to get out of the way should you roll over.

No, that wouldn't be safe. PLUS, the new puppy will not be housebroken. You will wake up to find that lil' pup has squatted just about everywhere in your room. Wait until the pup is older, trained, and housebroken before you let him sleep with you.

Crate train the new one. The old one probably won't like it, at first. Regardless, it's always a good idea to crate train a puppy.

Until the puppy is housebroken, I would suggest not letting her sleep with you unless you want to clean up a mess every morning.

i say you might. try putting the pup next to your head when you sleep that will decrease the risk of her getting crushed.
