If anyone has any help that would be great. My husband is a truck driver, and we travel all over the states and in Canada. I am trying to lose some weight, I have recently lost 100lbs, but I still need to lose more. Now that it is really cold (we are in ND now at 3F) does anyone have any other suggestions to help?
There is not any gym that is a national chain that supports a 70+ft truck and trailer, and truck stops are full of food and arcade games. Even doing situps and things like that I used to do outside, but that is not an option now with all the snow. Space inside our truck is very limited. I don't want to gain weight, so I have to do something. We are only home (Indiana) once a month. Help if you can!!!

Wow. That's a really good question. I wonder what truckers would think if a health club started installing equipment in the greasy spoons?

The only thing I can suggest is that you try to set up a diet for yourself which limits the amount of calories you eat in relation to the amount of exercise you are getting.

You might want to look into the Healthy Heart Diet.

There's some really good info here:

I found an interesting post from a Trucker regarding his dieting experience. It sounds a bit radical and, truthfully, one shouldn't
practice this without supervision from a physician.

NOTE: THIS TRUCKER has quite a few posts on this page.
Make sure to read them all. INSPIRING!!

Moderation is the key to everything. But you have to set some goals as to the limit of calories, the amount of exercise you get, and the types of food you are going to put in your body.

Just as an added note, I understand your reluctance to exercise in the middle of winter. The benefits of walking for half an hour a day though should far outweigh the drawbacks. Just learn how to bundle up; buy some windbreaking pants, a good thinsulate hat and scarf or headgear to feel as snug as a bug in a rug, and you'll find winter a lot more enjoyable.

The other thing I was thinking is that I haven't heard of anyone writing a book called 'The Trucker's Diet'; you have an opportunity to figure out all the healthy choices you have to make while on the road AND you could be the first to write about it.

Sure. Use the truck stop bathroom.
Stand at the sink and counter.
Hands on top of the counter. Squat down slowly, go up slowly.
10 times.
Step back a bit, put your hands on the edge of the counter.
Do counter top pushups. 10 times. Do slowly. You want your muscles to be worked to the max for excellent results. This is NOT jogging.
Put one foot back, firmly on the floor. Do the pushups again, feel your calf stretch in the foot set back. Do 10 times.
Now reverse feet and do the same for the other leg. 10 times.
Do this every day. Takes about 15 minutes total.

Next, do you have anything moderately heavy that you bring along in the truck. Like a 5 lb. fire extinguisher?

Pick up the extinguisher, or what ever else you picked to exercise with. Bend over, knees bent, elbows bent. HOLD the weight for 60 seconds. This tightens up the entire body and makes you stronger. By keeping the joints bent, your muscles hold the weight, not your bones. Do this exercise every OTHER DAY.

Make sure your husband does these exercises also. They will make him healthier, more alert, and stronger.

Drinking water instead of sodas and other unhealthy drinks will help a person lose some weight, but maybe you should try a few simple workouts that only take a few minutes out of the day. Doing stretches repeatedly is very good. Other than that, I would say to try and resist constatly eating truck stop foods, once and a while is ok, but if you over-do it, you'll pay the price.

If you stay in a hotel, wait till the afternoon when everyone is out, then choose some stairs that not many people use and run up and down them for five miutes, then rest for two minutes, then run for ten, then rest for two, then run for five, and back again. Do this for about half an hour, but for a shorter time at first. remember, once you've finished, just walk slowly for around ten mins. not up the stairs - on flat ground.
if you don't stay in a hotel, I'm really not sure... look up some things on the internet...
or, here are some things, but i don't have the pics so i hope you still get it...

SQUATS
Stand with yoyr feet shoulder-width apart. Extend your arms out in front of you to shoulder height, hands open, to help balance yourself.
Lower your butt like you're about it sit in a chair. Don't let your knees extend past your toes. hold for five seconds, then return to former position. do three sets of 8-10 reps.
PARACHUTE
Lie flat on yor back with your hands under your butt. Squeeze your abs and press your lower back against the floor as you raise your head and feet about two inches off the ground.
To a count of five, slowly raise your feet toward the ceiling. Pause, exhale, then slowly count to five as you lower your feet back into the former position. do three sets of ten reps.

there's also this. Listen, i've never ever tried it before, it just looks good, o.K? I've been considering it for a while now. don't do anything drastic. and I'm not sure if you'll be able to order it since you move areound so much...

Congratulation on losing the weight. Malls are often open in the morning before the stores open for people to walk around.

You could skip rope in an clean empty garage bay at the truckstop/truckwash, just ask someone set your watch alarm for 30 minutes and start skipping rope til the alarm goes off. or if you are allow in the trailer. you could do it there. after a few minutes you will get pretty warmed up so wear something under the sweats. gloves might be a pluse in unheated areas. the quicker you can get rid of the heat/calories the more calories you will burn.

I've misplaced 5 kilos in my first week. It's my tenth day and i've incorporated salad with some protein (eg. Egg/ lean chook) as you suggested. After four years of attempting, the fat is sooner or later coming off. It truly feels like magic! Get started at present!

If you folks stay in hotels or motels, perhaps you can get your walking in by walking the hallways or around the parking lot.
