I have a brittany mix, I nor my family is ever home during the day hardly to take her out to go to the bathroom for like 8-10 hours. I get mad because I don't thingk it is healthy for her bladder and it is not fair for her to hold it in. We don't have a doggy door, I just feel bad because I only take her out in the morning and about twice at night before bed. Is this healthy. I don't want her to have bladder problems or anything. Thank you.

Thank you. I am going to find someone to do that because I know now it could lead to really serious problems and that is not fair to her. Thank you.

The reason it is unhealthy is because it could lead to urinary tract of kidney problems. A more obvious problem it can cause is a UTI, which is not a simple thing in dogs, as it can lead to infections in the wall of the bladder.. I would try to get a friend to come over mid-day to walk her, or come home at a lunch break. She might be okay holding it for 8hours, most dogs are, but 10 hours is seriously pushing it.

BTW, it depends on her age. If she is an older dog, she should not be holding it for even 8 hours.

I have been told as a rule of thumb a dog should be able to hold their movements for one hour per month of age up to 8-10 hours. We have two dogs in our home, a 2 year old german shepherd mix and a 4 month old siberian husky shepherd mix. My older dog has been holding it for 8-10 hours a day for over 18 months and he has never had any infection or problem with his UT or intestines. The puppy as well has had a clean bill of health. If either dog has to use it before my husband or I return from work they go...although this is few and far between if it happens, with the older does it rarely ever does. I would talk with your vet, however from my experience it is not a health issue.

This can later turn into a very serious problem. She may also develop bladder and urinary track infections. In a worst case scenario, her urine may recede back up into her organs or develop a leakage. My suggestion is to either come home on a break and walk her (which I know isn't very practical for many), get a friend or family member to come in and take her out, or even hire a dog walker to come and pick her up for a walk in the afternoon.

whethere a dog likes to be held and cuddled with depends on the dog, i have dogs who do and dogs who dont. but you should still do it to desensitize the dog. this means, sitting down for 30 minutes a day, touch the dog on the body, around the mouth and gum, feet, and paws, so the dog gets use to human contact, that way when the need arises that you need to let say trim ur dogs nails oe brush ur dogs teeth, the dog would not try to back away due to discomfort. the ears of ur boston terrier will start to stand up as the cartilage hardens, if the ears are larger than typical bostons then it will take longer, at 9 weeks, it should be up soon.

Melanie,
I think Jasmin's assumption was a bad one. You don't appear to be a bad dog owner. Just to as some of these people have suggested and get someone to let her out and walk her. She should be fine and good luck to you.

no it isnt healthy for a dog to hold their urine or poo in. it could cause bladder or urinary tract infections. plus, while your gone you dont want you dog sitting there just constantly thinking about going to the bathroom. maybe you could ask a neighbor to come over during the day to let her out. or hire someone to do it.

Come home on your lunch hour and let her out or arrange for someone to come in and walk her. That is a long time for a dog to go without being walked.

No, it hurts. Try paper training. Be patient- once she catches on, she will be consistent. When she has an accident, save it on some newspaper, and put it where you want "her spot" to be, and leave it there, Take her to it, let her smell it, and praise her. Don't let her sense anger while she sniffs it- she is already scared over the accident. Let her know you are happy that pee is on the newspaper. It worked for me. Good luck.
