I'm an American and I'm young but I'm not exactly a party girl, so it doesn't matter if the town/city you suggest has great night clubs. I'm more interested in learning about the culture and history.

you could spend a lifetime in London and never see it all.

For sidetrip, maybe Oxford or Cambridge...or Brighton...or Dorset for the gorgeous countryside...or Cornwall or Devon for the rugged coastline...

You have to go to London obviously and then I'd take in the following which are all within a 2-3 hour train ride from London.

Oxford
Stratford-on-Avon
Bath
Winchester

please visit the city of YORK in north england.steeped in history,ancient wall still surrounds town,castles,forts,with viking,roman,tudor,in fact allsorts of history.a truly lovely place,also everything you need is in close area.please look it up on the internet,you wont regret it.have a nice stay.
