at 10 years for maybe 15 minutes, by 12 for a couple hours, depending on the child of course

Same age as my son...gender makes no difference.

I think it's really not an age anyway, it's more maturity level. Some kids are responsible enough at 12 to know what to do in an emergency and to be able to stay home without getting into trouble.

Some 17 year olds still aren't mature enough....

It really depends on the kid. Ask yourself:

1. If a stranger came to the door, would she know not to open the door?

2. When answering the phone or door, would she be natural at saying "Mom's in the shower right now" instead of "Mom's not home right now"

3. Can you trust her to stay out of trouble?

4. Would she know what to do in the event of a fire or other type of emergency?

That should give you an indication of readiness. I'm sure others could come up with questions too.

I guess it depends on how long your talking about and her history. Gen. Speaking they can stay home for a few hours taking care of others at the age of 12. I would say that if your daughter is 9, mature and responsible ( assuming she does not mind) leaving her alone while you run to the post office or store (15 min) would be fine. By 10 years 1 hour 11 2 hours 12 3-4 hours...

It all depends on how mature you feel your daughter is. If you think she is mature enough to stay home alone at 10 then she is. Most girls are responsible at a young age and can take care of themselves. During the day I wouldn't worry about it at all if you live in a good neighborhood with good people, you could always have a neighbor look in on her or call and check in.
My daughter is only 20 months, but my sister leaves her 12 year old daughter at home by herslef and she does very well.
Really no one can answer your question but you...

Consider her maturity levels. As a rule I say 14 because in the country I am in, 13 is the age for staying home alone, and 14 is the age for looking after other children too.

Dont leave her for too long at a time. Build up the trust you have in both of you. Dont try and place a tonne of rules on her if its just for only 15 minutes.

Young people like to think they have taken initiative themselves to behave or be good... when they are told too many rules they wont listen. Give her a few so she knows the boundaries, but too many and she will push them.

It would depend on the child...and the situation. I started staying home alone at 10...but my little sister (7) was across the street with a neighbor and the neighbor pretty much checked on me every hour or so. I'm not sure about my own daughter (she's only a toddler but thinking ahead-wise) I think I'd be more concerned than my mother had been since we live in apartments and don't know anyone in our building.

Bad people can find their way into good towns with good people. I would not leave my child alone before 18 years of age and not for a long time. It's sad that we live in times like this but we do!

It really depends on the matchurity level and the laws in your state. In ohio, it is 9, and my sister has stayed home for awhile now - she's 10 and can watch herself for about 2-3 hours at a time.

I say any time they know how to dial 911/999 and what a true emergancy is, how to contact the parents, proper phone manners, is a good age.

Probably 13 or 14. I was left home alone when I was 12 though and didn't like it. My daughter is very mature though so I would say yea probably 13 or 14.
