Congrats on your big trip to NYC - Broadway theatre tickets are a must have when you visit the Big Apple!
It all depends on your luck and the show you want to attend.
If you buy your tickets in advance from a broker, I recommend Broadway tickets from TickCo.com. I ran into one of their reps in NYC at a conference and he was able to hook me up with Spamalot tickets (second-row-right) the same day.
I see TKTS mentioned a lot for Broadway theatre tickets. I often hear they can find really cheap tickets, even on the day of the show, I'm talking even less than face value, but I've never gone through them for tickets, so I can't vouch for them personally. I will say I've heard from reputable sources that they are legitimate, so you should have no worries if TKTS turns out to be your best option.
If it's a big show, like Wicked, Spamalot, etc - you'll probably have to get Orchestra seats through a broker like TickCo but there might be some Mezzanine seats available through the box office for some shows, especially mid-week show-times.
If you don't mind trying your luck, (possibly being turned away) try the box office shortly before the show. Sometimes someone's friend, or friends can't make it to the show and they sell their tickets back to the box office the day of the show. Make sure you're on the list for a shot at those tickets and you just might get them at face value the day of the show.
And you can always try Ticketmaster before you head to New York. If Ticketmaster doesn't have the kind of tickets you are looking for, a broker is usually your next-best bet.
If you have a travel companion and two cell phones, have one wait for tickets at the box office and one wait down the street at TKTS and go with wichever otpion gets you the tickets and price you want to pay first.
Hope This Helps,

It all depends on the show that you want to see. Some of the shows, like Lion King, are sold out weeks in advance. So it would be hard to get tickets that day.
Other shows are not as popular (but still very good) so it would be easier to just walk up to the box office and get a ticket. Most shows have tickets from about $50 - $110, depending on seat location.
Ticketmaster is going to be the most expensive option - they charge huge service charges per ticket. Avoid them if you can.
You can always wait on the TKTS line in Times Square. They have half price tickets to most of the Broadway shows. Sometimes you can get really good seats too! But that is only for that day's performance, so if you wanted to see a show every day, you would have to wait on the line every day.

not ticketmaster. Visit www.playbill.com for all your broadway show information. An early word of advice, many of the bigger shows are heavily sold out, especially during a holiday week. Trying to get something last minute at the box office is a total gamble. Top ticket prices averag $110.00 each.
If you are open to anything, you can try getting 1/2 price tickets at TKTS. This box office is temporarily set up on 46th Street and Broadway, visit www.tdf.org/tkts for more info.
Enjoy NYC!
