And oddly enough they are much more common in the Appalachian Mountains than in the Rockies.

Rocky mountain spotted fever is spread by ticks. According to the Wikipedia article it is very dangerous and 3 to 5 percent of people who get it die. The tick carries a rickettsia type bacteria. Your brother should get antobiotic treatment right away.

the name of the tick is--> Amblyomma americanum as opposed to the ticks that spread Lyme---> Ixodid species
