Rocky mountain spotted fever is spread by ticks. According to the Wikipedia article it is very dangerous and 3 to 5 percent of people who get it die. The tick carries a rickettsia type bacteria. Your brother should get antobiotic treatment right away.

the name of the tick is--> Amblyomma americanum as opposed to the ticks that spread Lyme---> Ixodid species
