Cooney's corner threw in the towel prompting the referee to stop the fight in the 13th round. Cooney never quit and the referee didn't stop it until then. It does go in the record books as a 13th round TKO. I saw the fight. Cooney's corner quit for him. By the way Cooney and Holmes are friends today and Holmes helps him with his F.I.S.T program helping former fighters to get jobs.

true, cooney didn't quit and the referee didn't just stop the fight but, if memory serves, cooney really had nothing left. so much pre-fight fuss was made about cooney's stamina that i think he'd planned for a long fight, rather than coming out smokin', which was more his style and probably would've given him a better chance at victory(he had no chance in a long fight w/holmes). at any rate, cooney had been in trouble, was looking kinda shaky, and his corner, out of concern for not letting him take anymore punishment, threw in the towel.
