If you are talking to a cat like they there a moron, will that get you slapped or scratched in the face?
I've seen it happen twice, I wonder if that is common.

Not so much the talking part. Also depending if you mean talking in a moronic voice or actually saying moronic things. Usually though, if you are in their face, the chance is a lot more likely for for them to slap or scratch you in the face.

I know of a cat that all you have to do is put your face in front of hers and she will swat and hiss. So it depends on the cat, but they also don't understand English, so they probably don't even know what you are saying.

well cats are gods/godesses..so I would tread lightly...really..I tell my tough outdoor boy kitty to "Be Nice!!" in a very firm voice..especially when I first adopted him and he was getting used to my 3 female old lady cats...he understood and would back off..he didn't like it..eyes would flash...but back up he would...then mucho praise from me...
as for patronizing..they expect and demand it..if you get a swat, it more likely means that you are not paying enough attention...gotta heed those clues when they want attention!..ohh and they don't always give clues that we notice...very fickle little soft yummy creatures...

If you use a mean tone of voice, sure a cat will snub you! Cats learn quickly if you're not friendly...and they'll avoid you.

ha ha ha ha... that's good. I "baby talk" my cats but they accept the fact that I'm batty and THEY indulge my silliness.
