“There’s no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft, and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm’s way,” said Rangel, who will chair the House Ways and Means Committee when Democrats take over as the majority in January.

For those with historical perspective beyond last week, we had a draft in this country once upon a time and it was truly a disaster.
Do you believe you or anyone else should be taken from their home and job and forced to something they do not wish to do?
Maybe you would think it OK to take people from the coast of Africa and force them to work on plantations. A draft is the same thing!

Rangel is an idiot.

BTW - do _any_ Democrats in Congress have children serving in the military?

Although that is a good theory, everyone knows that this would only disadvantage more kids that do not agree with this war. Even though it would have meant more opposition to the war, the President would probably do it anyway, no matter how many lives were ruined. I think we should just continue to give people the choice to serve.

No it wouldn't be. And as an army wife I hope they don't do it. I think it's better to have people there that are willingly serving instead of forced into it. And I have to say ....again....that it is NOT just a bunch of poor uneducated people in the military and i get so sick of hearing about how it is. That's just so demeaning to the ones who are already enlisted and it's just not true.

i think it would also be a good idea to put each leader in a boxing ring with their pecieved enemies and duke it out up close and personal before sending poor and middle class into any conflict.
