Because we live in a free country, where people are free to not learn our language. And since companies want their money, they are willing to speak foreign languages to get it.

If you don't like it, vote with your dollars. Don't spend money with companies that do that, and let them know why you are going to their competition. That's the fastest way to change it. (Of course, you'll have to get a lot of other people to do it to before anything will change)

I do find that funny... It's probably the way the system is programmed where it needs a response before it moves on.

However, I'm running across more automated systems that only ask to press 2 for Spanish and English is the default. (I'm assuming it's saying press 2 since I don't understand, but I hear the word "dua")...

Hurray for upgraded system software! I now only have to wait 19.5 minutes versues 20 minutes on hold. Where's that 0 button to just go to the operator??? :-)

Yes, that drives me nuts, too. All automated attendants and voicemail greetings should automatically be in English in the United States, and then give the callers the option to "Press 1 for Espanol", etc.
