I define a squat as legs wide apart (more than shoulder length), toes pointed at 45 degree angles away from the body, hands on the waist, and squatting using the thighs and the butt to control. No leaning forward. A lunge can be in different directions, but it's basically sending one leg out but keeping the body balanced between both legs. Check out the pictures for what I mean.

A squat requires that you stand with your feet shoulder width apart and keeping your back straight bend the knees till your bum is in line with the knees.
A lunge is when you start with both feet shoulder width apart but you stride forward leaving one leg behind you. Your front leg will bend at the knee and your rear leg will also bend at the knee and you will be on the ball of your foot. The front leg will have full foot contact with the floor.
You acn either do a certain amount with one leg in front and then change legs or you can stride around a large room changing legs after each one.

lunge is standing and stepping one foot out in front of the other, then bending both knees, letting your back knee almost touch the ground.
