There's been a couple time when I've either been pulled over or at a broken up party when an officer has told me to put out my cigarette. Are they legally able to enforce that?

I should be more specific I guess. I'm legally allowed to smoke (23), it was never in a place where smoking is prohibited.
Once, it was while I was the passenger and the driver was getting ticketed.
Another time, I was in a garage at a party that was being broken up at the time.

Friend - That depends on your age and state laws, but yes, its not unlikely they can legally enforce it if you are under 18. And just a suggestion...I would go along with it no matter what the situation was cause they are the ones in control at the time and place. GBU

There has to be a little more circumstances to your question. Police don't usually walk up to people and say put out your cigarette and then walk away. If I was stopping someone to question them, yes, I had them put out the cigarette because I didn't want them using it as a weapon on me (I know it wouldn't kill me, but I didn't want to get burned) or flicking the thing on me. Or if I was checking for a DWI or a DUI I wouldn't let them smoke which I could do. If I'm at a bad accident where there might be a possibility of a gasoline fire, or something like this, then yes, they can tell you to put out the cigarette. Depends on the totality of the circumstances.

If you're in a legal place to smoke, and you're of legal smoking age, then no. A cop cannot tell you to put your cigarette out unless you are smoking illegally.

its not against the law to smoke around cops . My dad's a police sgt. I asked him haha, I've been in the same type of situations though , I don't know why they would ask that. But you don't have to put them out , they will just bother you about it if you don't though .

The officer wants your attention, and wants to watch your hand movement and does not want smoke in thier face.
And a a suspect can burn a officer with it.
If they ask you to stop, yes you have to.

Some police officers don't smoke and they don't want to breath in second hand smoke so they will ask you to put your cig out. just do it to be courteous

That cigarette is considered to be a potential weapon that could be used to cause harm to an Officer. Not to mention second hand smoke. It tells an Officer a LOT about your attitude & how much respect you have for authority. Refuse & I guarantee you won't enjoy what could happen to you next!
