defenatly take someone with you. i've told this to someone else in another question, but i stand by it, chew gum. it sounds weird but doing something with your mouth is calming. don't look at the needle whatever you do. focus on something on the wall. theres usually a poster in the room. read that. i really hope everything goes well and don't forget to breath.

You should be able to bring someone with you. Just explain that you have a "needle phobia" and you need the support. Depends on the type of "blood test" too. Are they going to draw blood or just do a finger stick. I hate the finger sticks because they stay sore much longer! Remember that these nurses do this every day all day and they are professionals. I've had many that didn't even hurt much at all. Think about how tiny the needle is or maybe just close your eyes and pretend it's just a misquito. Try some deep cleansing breaths when you start to feel anxious, whether it's on the way, when you get there or whenever it is. I hope this helps a little. Just remember how very small the needle is~~~tiny, tiny, tiny little bitty thing.

Hey. I'm not sure where abouts you live, but whenever I've had bloodtests, they don't usually like people being in the room because of Health & Safety, however, you can always call ahead and ask. I think the main thing to remember though is that it's mind over matter. Blood tests are so so easy. I don't know anyone who has said that they think that they hurt! I don't mind needles at all, I've had alot in the past, bloodtests, injections, tattoos, alot. And I always get nervous just before it happens, it's pretty normal. Just don't work yourself up about it, try and think of something else, deep breathe (3 counts in through your nose, 3 out through your mouth) and just relax all those muscles. Just let the nurse know that you are really nervous and take it from there. You'll be fine, blood tests are honestly no big deal at all.

Of course you can bring someone with you...or, you can tell the nurse you are terribly scared and ask if you can hold the hand of another nurse. That's the good thing (usually) about nurses - they care how you feel and want to make you feel better.
Really, the only way you will get over your fear or be able to deal with it is going through it.

I'm not as terrified of needles as you are, but when I've had to have an IV put in (gallbladder surgery), I brought a little stuffed animal for me to squeeze in the other hand. Then I also had a little "friend" in my room for my recovery. I also did that when I was going to have a spinal tap, but that was canceled at the last minute. But both times the hospital was OK with it.

You should tell you doctor about your fear before they draw the blood. I'm sure you're not the only one with the fear of needles and they will know how to handle the situation. Have you tried seeking professional help to overcome your fear?

I have a fear of needles as well and have ended up hooked up to a heart monitor during one blood test. Breathe..breathe. Take a cell phone & play a game to distract you..maybe a book or a picture to distract you. Good luck!

Have you ever heard of EFT? Emotional Freedom Technique.
It's really effective for eliminating fears and phobias. Check out Gary Craig's website. He has put up the introductory manual for free download. You can learn this simple technique in minutes. It really works. I've taken the intro course. I love it. Good luck. You can do this.

yes, you can bring someone to hold your hand. also i know you might think this is a little strange, but if possible, take some sort of sedative to calm you down.
