Honestly, my first drink was Rye. Rye! Trust me, give the kids that and they won't be drinking for a long long time.
I'd suggest introducing them to a fine wine, maybe a Pinot Noir, with less tannins than other reds so they can avoid hangovers.

The most common starter alcohols in the UK (varies geographically) are strong ciders like white lightening, fortified wines like buckfast or vodka based mixes whether home made or shop brought. The reason for these choices is that the levels of sugar in them make them more palatable for young tastebuds. As to how to drink young people to alcohol. I was allowed beer at 14, wine and 16 and obviously at 18 I could do whatever I want. Realistically i started experimenting with alcohol a lot younger and continued to enjoy drinking (as I still do) on a regular basis. The problem is not one generated by alcohol itself. People have been drinking underage since the law was introduced. The problem lies in the lack of discipline recieved by the majority of young people. As they have no qualms about terrorizing neighbourhoods while sober and know that no-one can touch them for it of course the problem is exacerated when they have been drinking. Alcohol is not the root cause or even a major cause of the crimes and anti-social behaviour that is common in the UK today. The lack of discipline and respect for the rights of others is.

There isn't a drinking age in many european countries, italy particularly.
And we have a drinking age of 18 and america 21. and we have all the problems with drinking underage or binge drinking
i thinkit should be something socially introduced. Become part of life so it is not something that becomes a weekend thing for immature 18 year olds. Only then will young people understand that drinking in huge quanitities isn't such a great thing when you turn 18 and get given this huge responsibility of drinking in a mature way

1) I'm not sure I would agree that the first drink is cheap brandy or whiskey. I would assume the first drink is most likely beer, with wine being a second, or possible one of the new cooler mixers (like Mike's lemonade).
As for intro, it depends on the person. If cheap brandy was my first experience, I'd look for something else personally.
At what age? Some cultures think they should be introduced to it socially, at a young age, I myself think it's better if they learn to live their adult life without it and try it later if they want. Too many get used to having it without learning to live without it.

I think you should have a fine drink such as champagne for your first drink. That way, you get used to good drinks instead of drinking watered-down stuff all the time.
To answer your last question, I think young people should be allowed to drink at any age, but after they have proven themselves mature and responsible. Maybe we should have drinking licenses as well as driving licenses.

Here is the sad part - most of everyone's first drinks are stolen from family or neighbors. Raiding grandpa's liquor cabinet, ect.
So that cheap crap your drinking, means your mom or dad is a cheap drunk - no care for taste - just whatever gets the job done for the biggest bang for the buck.
