You and the dog need to go to some obedience training classes so you can learn how to handle him and he will learn to respect you.

Turn the collar so it meets the leash on the back of the dog's neck. You need to hold the leash about 6-12 inches from the collar above the dog's head so he has no slack. For some reason when dogs are walking they respond better to an upward pull on the leash. If you let them get ahead and then pull them straight back they tend to resist.
Jerk upwards quickly but gently and say no if he tries to get ahead of you or tries to sniff the ground then move him back behind you and keep walking.
Keep the collar high on his neck so you don't hurt him when you give him the discipline jerks and make them quick popping motions. If you watch a dog show the handlers always hold the leash directly above the dogs head and high on the neck. This gives you the most control and is the safest way to apply pressure. Keep moving the dog forward, this gets their brains into the right frame of mind. Any time the dog pulls against you or tries to walk ahead pull upwards quickly and say no.
After the third day or so the dog will get the message and walk along side you with the majority of his body behind you. When he needs to pee and poop just stop at the place where you want him to go and wait with a slack leash, he should be able to wander around a little in this area.
Good luck!

I know the feeling, i had a huuuge dog ( an oversized lab) a few years ago and i used to run behind him when out for a walk..i'll always remember rushing past a friend, the lead at full strecth, the dog galloping like crazy, i just COULDN'T stop to talk! ..You could try a body harness or a 'halty' these go around their heads instead of their necks and they can't yank as much...

Get an Easy Walk harness by Gentle Leader, which is self restraining, and walk your dog confidently as if you expect him to behave and don't allow that behavior. Correct it when it occurs by pulling him towards you in a sideways motion. Take him to some basic obedience classes.
I have my dogs trained to behave on the leash but I also sometimes allow them to run and play. I have the leashes that give them room to move. I keep it short and locked when it is time to walk in the calm manner. They have learned the difference. It takes training and consistency and it helps to have a class to go to and learn with others and with distractions.

Im sorry that i cant be that much of help, but my dog( a boxer) does the same exact thing. What i do is walk extra extra slow, and shorten the leash. that way my dog will walk slower. But when i lengthen the leash she pulls. I really have to figure out how to stop this.
Yes, everyone is saying "buy this, buy that", but a dog should be able to walk nicely without having to pay. I hate it when its a nice, crisp, spring day, and i want to go on a nice walk with my dog, and i end up sprinting around my block.

I would say at first get a choker collar. Some people dont like them and they think they are mean but they do a good job of training the dog. I used one to train my Lab/collie mix. She is a great dog now and walks even with small kids holding her leash. I was goign to joke and say get a smaller dog HEHEHE hope this helps.

I got this collar called a Halti. It goes around the dogs head and muzzle. It makes it near impossible for the dog to pull you. If you work with something like that in time your dog will get better on walks.

It really depends on how big the dog is. If he overpowers you, it might be a good idea to invest in a dog trainer for the problem. Just having a tug of war with a big dog does not work. Believe me.

Whatever you do, please don't mistreat the animal. I mean, going outside for a walk to a dog is like a man getting an orgasm. You guys rush, and get excited right?? Don't punish the dog because he enjoys going for walks. You can always get a retractable leash that way he has a little bit of space between the time it takes you to catch up. Good luck, and be sweet to your pet. :)
