Depends on wither it's sluggish, or hyper. If your thyroid is sluggish, you will gain weight, lose hair on your head, but grow more on your body, extreme fatigue. To check your thyroid, feel under your chin, each side about 2 to 3 inches apart, see if it feels swollen. A simple blood test will prove if it's not functioning properly, and medication will correct any imbalance, women should have theirs, checked yearly.

A swelling in the lower neck. That would be hypothyroidism. Weight gain, fatigue. Otherwise none as under active thyroid.
It's geneic. My mother had it, died from thyroid cancer. I have an enlarged thyroid, under control with medication. My son has hypothyroidism also. Many family members have it and are treated successfully with medication. Blood work reveals the level of function.
Over active, hyperthyroidism. Losing weight, cold and very anxious and shaky. Also controlled with medication.

Krissy, I have a daughter that underwent a complete thyroidictomy at 17. There are many symptoms depending on if it is an overactive or underactive thyroid. Go to this site for more info. http://mayoclinic.com/health/hypothyroidism/DS00353/DSECTION=2 Good luck!

your thyroid can be under active or over active, under active thyroid can cause weight gain ,extreme tiredness, eyes sensitive to bright light or glare, dry skin, hair loss , unexplained sadness/depression.vivid dreams, there are many symtoms. overactive thyroid can cause weight loss, sleeplessness, mood swings, unable to concentrate, inability to relax, the thyroid is the hub of the body controlling metabolism, hormones. as i said there are many symtoms. if worried you should have blood tests done, and have them do T.T.F (total thyroid function). hope this has been helpful

I have one symptom. My throid goes into "hyperdrive" according to my dermatologist and gives me Vitiligo. Here are some pictures of others with the same thing. This happened to me after my lover died suddenly.

All thanks to an overactive thyroid that causes my body to think my skin color is a disease, so it sends white blood cells to kill the skin color.
