Whey protein can help aid in reducing muscle soreness after bout of vigorous activity such as basketball practice. However I suggest that you complement your whey protein supplement with a carbohydrate such as Gatorade or some juice(i.e. orange, grape, etc). Adding a carbohydrate into the mix will also help aid in muscle recovery as well as restore glycogen back into your body. You may want to consider adding your whey protein to a smoothie. Using whey protein is a good choice because it is easily digestible and quickly absorbent.

Also you might want to consider doing some active rest activity. If you some spire time go for a light jog, a brisk walk and/or some light stretching. The reason behind this suggestion, is that these activities allow blood to flow more efficiently throughout the body and help you recover much quicker. Since the bloodstream carries all the nutrients that body will need, using active rest will help those nutrients get to through quicker.
