Chocolate calms the beast within

I cant really say if specific flavors such as sweet or sour stimulate the average person differently. I mean, to each is own, but, I can say that eating will make everyone feel better because food is fuel to the body. If you don't put gas in your car but keep driving it what will it do? Shut down, right? With a lot of people, savory foods put them in a better mood because they activate a certain part of the brain that triggers a memory of home and the foods that you had as a child. I saw that on Oprah when Dr. Oz was her guest. He published the book "You on a diet".

I agree with most of the above. It's the chemicals in the food that affect the chemicals in our bodies and the mood we are already in has some affect on what we crave. Comfort foods I think it's just the amount of time it takes to eat the food and what you are thinking about as you are eating. Like most people with eating disorders use comfort foods because of the chemicals in them and the time that passes while you eat them. Some foods you can only eat so much of until you are just sick of it.... bitter and sour. So I'm guessing it's not so much what tastes or food you eat, but the fact that you are eating I believe and no I do not have an eating disorder. I think everyone has thier own comfort foods. Depending on the person and what they enjoy it would then impact the mood they are in, but so very slightly.

Yes indeed. Many might think that chocolate helps relax and soothe your mood, however "chocolate contains two ingredients phenylethylamine and theobromine, that could cause mood swings". When first eating this sweet treat you might feel relieved and a bit better however the effect does not last for long once is gone you feel more exhausted and start sensing anxiety. You see "Phenylethylamine a chocolate ingredient is said to cause migraines and other headaches, but not for everyone. It is believed that phenylethylamine causes blood vessels to dilate in the brain, thereby causing headaches". Of course many have heard of hyperactivity this is usually caused by sweets such as candy, and once again chocolate. What you eat definitely will affect your body because you have to get a feeling of satisfaction or dissatisfaction from whatever foods you consume, this is how you know what foods you like, and what foods you detest due to your sense of taste.

YES? BUT ...
My mood does influence what I eat though.
I'm not a good candidate to answer this ... being diabetic.
When my blood sugars go high I get mean & nasty. When they are to low I'm to mellow.
I do know... when I start with the sweets, It's difficult to stop. This is the worst time of year too. With the holidays there are sweets everywhere. For some unknown reason ... most diabetics are diagonsed in the winter. This is a fact, why .. they don't know.

Yes and no. I guess it just depends on if afterwards it upsets my stomach. LOL. Forreal though a nice healthy meal does keep me in a more lively mood. I am more energetic and happy. I honestly haven't paid much attention to weather sweet, sour or bitter foods changes my mood. But I will get to you on that as soon as I experiment a little.

Certain foods can chemically affect an individuals mood, as seen with chocolate or drinks containing caffeine. I don't believe that it is actually the flavor that affects a person's mood, however. Generally, it is the release of naturally occurring chemicals such as, serotonin, which relax or stimulate the central nervous system. I would start your research on your project by reading some scientific articles on natural stimulants that occur in nature, such as caffeine and plants like ginseng, etc.

I can say that eating a bowl of lentil soup or a black bean filled burrito really makes me feel happy. I can't really say what flavor those are. Not sweet and not sour or bitter?

When I eat chocolate (milk chocolate, milk chocolate with nuts or almond, bitter chocolate with nuts or almond) it makes me happy (if I'm in a good or neutural mood, if I'm an a bad mood - won't help). Something sour like lemon, lime, passion fruit or cherry helps me to calm down, sometimes makes me feel better.

I'm not sure how scientifically sound this is, but even the thought of raw onions will certainly NOT make me happier. Lemon in water or tea is not going to improve my mood, either. Milk chocolate (sweets in general, maybe, only not 'sweet sweet') will perk me up and make me easier to live with. But the sure-fire mood improver here is Mountain Dew, strong coffee or Earl Grey tea.
