It's a good idea on the first date - that way no one has any right to expectations of "tit for tat", so to speak.

If the first date goes well, I've always taken turns. That sends a clear signal that you're on equal footing financially but want to continue seeing each other just because you like each other. If you can't afford the same type of restaurant, pick something in your price range when it's your turn - or eat in. Nothing beats a home-cooked meal for ambiance!

Never on a first date with someone you are interested in ...relationship is a definite possibility.....any time with friends and after say 5 or 6 dates and a relationship is in progress...makes it so much easier to see each other more often when bills/checks are split...and it's especially nice if you ask him out and insist on picking up the whole tab! that is on a rare circumstance...his birthday.. a promotion graduation

If the guys shows he wants me to go dutch, yes. But it would cost him less to pay everything, at least on the first date - and mainly if he had invited me, cause it will cost him some disappointment on my part. Not cause of the money itself, but due to the lack of interest he will have displayed.

On the first date, the guy usually pays. After that, I offer to pay about half the time, and always when I invite him somewhere. It depends on your incomes too--if he makes a lot and you do not, it's fair to have him pick up the tab on more expensive dates while you pay for the lesser ones.
