Humans use their hands to wave at the teacher when they say, "I know" I know!" A dog can't get that fact across with just a look, or wag of his tail, so they use their legs just for standing and getting around. The tail is an indicator of a dogs emotions.
The idea that a tail helps them balance isn't valid. What about all the dogs whose owners have the tails removed? They seem to get around pretty well.
Cattle and other animals use their tails to swat away flies and other annoying critters. Might be the intended use of the dog's tail.

Ok.
Well, anyway, humans do have tails, inside the whom that is. When we are born, they aren't cut off or anything.... They actually just fuse together with the rest of our bodies. Usually, part will just fall off on its own and a small piece is left to fuse together with your body.
Be glad you don't have a tail because I think it would look realy weird sticking out of your pants. If you do have a tail, I'm sorry if that offends you. After all, I don't know where you are and I can't see you.
Hope that helps.
P.S. Don't ask why I know this because I just do.
Keep wagging!!

we do have tails but you cant see it but you can and do feel it have you ever fell and landed on your bottom and then had pain at the bottom of yor spine it is what they call the coccyx
Your coccyx is made up of four fused vertebrae. It is an evolutionary remnant of the tail found in most other vertebrates

If you check the images of human embryo growing up, you'd notice they have tails but eventually loss it growing up...like tadpoles. Perhaps because we no longer need tails to communicate, dogs do.

The primary purpose of tails in animals is for balance. With quadrepeds, they need it to balance their head or they would tilt forward. Bipeds have their head over their body, so there's no need to balance it out.

Well if you look at evolution we probably did at one time, when we no longer needed it it disappeared from the gene pool.
