This is very wrong. You should tell your 5 year old cousin that no matter what the teacher says ALL throughout her lifetime, if she has to go to the bathroom..go.
It's not always healthy holding your bodily functions in. Tell her mom to talk to the teacher and tell your cousin to not feel bad or embarrassed, this was not her fault. But from now on, she should just go to the bathroom without asking.

The teacher was out of line. The child's mom needs to talk to the principal. I am not sure about your school district, but this happened in school district when my sister was in kindergarten (she is mentall handicap as well). The teacher refused to let her go to the bathroom. After my great grandparents had to visit almost 20 times in 3 months they finally went straight to the principal. After more investigation the teacher was removed from her teaching position and moved into 5th grade. She apparently let kids pee their pants on MANY occasions. She actually had sent home notes to parents asking them to send extra outfits in case it happened. Sadly no parents were talking to each other and didn't make the connection.
I am very sure if the teache is making your cousin wait she is making everyone else as well. Usually there are less than 30 feet between a kindergarten room and a bathroom (for reasons like this). I really suggest parents skipp the teacher and speak to school admin.

I find it interesting that you didn't give any background on the situation. Do you know the whole story? Is it possible that your little cousin was peviously in the bathroom, "just playing around" instead of doing her business, as all children do from time to time? How did the teacher handle it afterward? All of these are questions that can help you and her mother understand what happened, make sure your cousin still feels positively about going to school, and prevent it from happening in the future.
I'm a primary school teacher, and honestly, something similar happened in my class several years ago. A little boy asked repeatedly to go to the bathroom. I let him go every time he asked, but I soon discovered that he was simply "crying wolf" so he could walk down the hall and play a bit. Finally, I had to put a stop to the endless bathroom train, so I said, "No. You will have to wait until we finish the story". Unfortunately for him and me, this was the one time he was serious, and he ended up having an accident. I immediately got him cleaned up, called his mother, and talked to him, explaining that this was an accident and that we both messed up. Big hugs all around, and he was okay.
Eventually, what we (his parents and I) discovered from all this was that this was the kind of student who needed frequent "wiggle breaks", and asking to use the restroom was the only thing he could think of to get out of his seat. We came up with a non-bathroom-related "secret sign" that let me know he needed to get up and move, and all was well after that. Is it possible your cousin is a wiggler?

Chances are that you haven't heard the entire story. As a teacher, the bathroom battle is a constant one. While I've never denied a student the right to use the bathroom, I HAVE made it abundantly clear that my students should use the restroom during scheduled breaks. If a break is given right before class, there's no sense in having 10 kids ask to use the restroom in the middle of a lesson. Perhaps your cousin was playing in the restroom when it was time for her to go. Perhaps she had JUST gone to the restroom, which is why the teacher told her to wait. Or, perhaps her teacher suspected she only wanted to play, and misjudged the situation. I personally don't get the seemingly arbitrary waiting time of 25 minutes. If a student asks to use the restroom during class and we're in the middle of a lesson, I make them wait until the end of the lesson or until the class starts doing their independent work. Twenty-five minutes is too long of a wait time for 5 year olds.
Hopefully your cousin was embarrassed enough about the accident to make sure that she NEVER has another one at school, and hopefully her teacher was embarrassed enough about the accident to make sure that she NEVER denies a child the right to use the restroom in a reasonable amount of time.

No teacher, friend, family member, or anyone else will make my kid wait unless there is a very legitimate reason. Reasons being there are no bathrooms (but if outdoors then there is again no reason to wait), safety precautions, and that is about it. You don't make a child wait to pee. Because then you end up with a situation like this, a child pees on themselves, other kids pick on her, and then she is humiliated for the rest of the day, year, or even life. If this little girl were mine I would make it known to her that if she has to pee and the teacher says no then she is to get up and go to the bathroom. Do not wait. Then I would be in the principles office standing up for my child. That's that. There are no ifs ands or buts about it you DO NOT make a child wait to pee.

Take those wet clothes and make that teacher wash them! Hell yeah it's wrong. I have the same problem, my teachers never let me use the bathroom. We need to go to the board about some of these teachers...
That's wrong that she said, 'Wait 25 minutes'.. I would be all over that teacher..
But next time, tell your kid if she has to go like really, really badly.. just leave the classroom.
But yeah, go complain..

That is a bunch of bull and I would be outraged. You don't tell a 5 year old they can't use the bathroom, even if she has a habit of going to the bathroom often it shouldn't matter, going to the bathroom is going to the bathroom, that is just wrong. I would really have to bite my tongue if I was the one who had to talk to that teacher, she should know better, why the hell is she a teacher anyway?

When I was younger I had the same problem. My granny told me to whenever it is an emergency and the teacher tells me to wait to just get up and go. making a child hold she/he bathroom can mess there insides up. If the child gets in trouble for having to go and not listening to the teacher that's wrong maybe somebody needs to make the teacher hold her bathroom until she can't hold it. Maybe she will see how it feels to be embarrassed.

I understand that teachers have rules and guidelines that they need to go by. However, I think most of them are too strict on bathroom breaks. I think the mother needs to have a talk with the teacher about this so that hopefully in the future this won't happen. The parent needs to be the one to make sure the teacher lets her child go when they need to and if needed go to the principal if it does not get resolved.
