Only if it's equally okay for them to ask you your gender in the first conversation with you.
No, really...of course not! Unless you sit down with them and spend 8 solid hours talking to them an no one else, that's most certainly the type of thing that normal humans don't discuss until well into their relationships with each other.

why does it matter what race someone is they are still a person i think the people that only talk 2 a certin race is dumb and askin what race someone is shows that person how closed minded u are

I think itwould be rude to ask them at first. later on, you should figure it out. I have seen people that I was not sure of their race and found out later on. good luck.

I think it is, by not asking you are making it a problem in witch it shouldnt be. Asking someone's race can be fun and exciting.

You can be like "you know, you have a really gorgeous skin tone. can i ask where your family is from?' that is more tactful and non-invasive question to ask if you really want to know the answer.
