You could say something to remind them of the thing they needed that money for or of what you were doing when they asked to borrow that money. That might remind them that they still owe you, in case they've forgotten.
Or you could talk about how you're broke right now or how you need money and could sure use getting back the money you lent them.

This is the same problem everybody faces when they lend their friends money. It is an everlasting problem. The moral of the story is never lend anyone any money. Then there won't be such a problem. Keep sending them e-mail reminders or text message reminders if you hate talking to them face to face. Tell them you are in dire need of the money and if they are a friend to you as you had been to them they should help out by repaying you the loan NOW. If they take more than a month to repay, sever ties with them. If they are your friend they would even pawn their jewelry or watches to repay you.

It's easier for a man. You walk in to a bar and say "If you give me back that money you owe me, I'll have enough to get you a beer". Perhaps you can come up with something along those lines.

If you have to remind someone, then you know you are dealing with someone you should not be friends with. Come straight out and say I need the money that you owe me! You really find out who your friends are when you loan money, thats for sure.

Make a joke of it...say in a very light, humorful tone..."The other day I was scrounging for dimes at the bottom of my purse to pay for my coffee and I kept wondering how I spend my money so fast. It's like it comes and goes! By the way, you don't happen to have that 10 bucks I lent you, I don't have enough dimes for lunch..."

Simply pretend like you don't remember they owe you money...
Then out of no where say " Do you have ______ dollars I can borrow?"... They may smile and say "I owe you".... or if they are really trying to get over they will tell you why they can't loan you the money.
Whatever you do paint the picture that u really need it now....

Never lend someone anymore money than you can afford to lose. That being said, say to them "I would like for you to give me back the money you borrowed" and if they can't give all of it back at once try to work out a repayment schedule with them.

Make light of it at first by asking if the item they needed for is working. You could also just outright give them a gentle reminder by telling them you're a little tight for money and could they please pay you.
Usually without being forthright most people forget so they need their memories jogged.

If they have owed you the money for a long time say a few months to a year you need to be more assertive. Say ", I need you to return my money. I'm not leaving until you return it".
