Cat urine is very powerful and if you're not sure where the smell is actually coming from to eradicate it, get a blacklight. The cat pee glows under a blacklight. You might be surpised to see all the places the cat has sprayed! Then wash each area with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle found in pet stores. It's a bit expensive, but worth it.
Cats spray for a variety of reasons. You'll want to make sure any cats you have are spayed or neutered while they are very young. They also could be having territorial issues with other cats. If you keep on top of cleaning the sprayed areas, other than getting rid of the cat(s), you should be able to limit the bad smells.
Oh, and use Glade scented oil plug ins! I like the Clean Linen smell the best!

Never get rid of the cat, where is the love? Don't mean to be moralizing, and I'm referring to another answer you got, but is that what you do with a member of the family, get them out the door the minute something stinks? Charmin! Cats don't stink as such, unless they need a bath!
There are many solutions, depending on the problem. First of all, why is there smell? I mean, where exactly does it come from?
Is it the litter tray? If so, try clumping wood based cat litter, so that wee forms blocks you can get rid of daily when you get the solid waste out. Oko Plus is a great one. If you leave the pee there, as it will be with cheap clay litter or expensive silicon based one, every time the cat uses their toilet some urine sticks to their paws and then, drop by drop, it gets carried onto the carpet. Not their fault. Never use silicon based or bentonite, the first is just pointless unless you change the whole tray daily, the second just stinks BAD. Don't know why. Seems cheaper, it ain't. Once a month/every two weeks, depending on how many cats you have, change the whole litter in the tray and wash the tray thoroughly with cat-friendly disinfectant (not bleach or Dettol) or just plain soap.
If you feel adventurous, a new German product called Zielonka is said to work miracles in erasing odours. Look it up, it's sold online in the UK. It's a round piece of ridged steel that when left partially immersed in water works by breaking down the molecules of stench into smaller ones that the nose doesn't pick up. It was discovered in a factory when a scientist by mistake left a piece of this particular league of steel in a washbasin and the next day the foul smell of the gents was gone.
Is the cat having accidents around the house? This could be due to a) a bladder problem, take kitty to the vet to rule that out, b)the litter tray is dirty/stinky/unpleasant for some reason, c) something is upsetting kittycat, like a new cat in the home or a kid teasing her or anything else upsetting, you would know. To clean the smell of cat accidents up I've heard you should (in case you have carpeted floors) use biological washing powder in warm water (pour, brush, absorb with towel/paper) than surgical alcohol. Or, if you don't mind spending a few bob, buy a pet odour eliminating spray solution, there's a good one from an online store, but I'm not sure this would count as advertising so I'll avoid the name of the store.
Periodically clean your carpet with a rug doctor or equivalent, as you would do normally. Or maybe pour a powder mix of bicarbonate of soda, salt, and essential oils or bath salts and bicarbonate only over the carpet, close the door, leave overnight then vacuum before letting the cat in.

Hi Little Bird,
One of the best ways to get rid of all cat smells is to get a bowl of hot water and add a scoop of biological washing powder then clean the area that smells then the enzymes in the powder break down the smell

Get rid of the cat! lol seriously airfreshners will make the cats ill the chemicals are hareful and shake and vac for the floors causes asthma in pets and allergies. Your best bet is baking soda put it on the carpets and then vacum it up some how it absorbes smells and is harmless to pets by a open window place a mint or lavender plant and use frebreeze on curtains and fabris but give it 30mins before letting the pets in the room to give it time to clear and dry. candles are also okay but put them in a safe place.

It really depends on the source of the smell!!! If it is the litter this will need to be cleaned out more regularly, use catsan clumping as you get get rid of the urine to. never use a cleaning lotion that turns cloudy in water this is poisonous to cats. also don't use an ammonia based one as this attracts the cat to urinating in the area you have cleaned!!!

A few tablespoons of bicarb in some warm water is great for absorbing smells and neutralising the ammonia, can always add a couple of drops of T Tree oil, animals are none too keen on it and it will kill any lingering bacteria, bonne courage.

If the cat smell is from spraying you need the pet deodorizer urine be gone after you use that you need to clean throroughly. If its soaked into the wood under the carpet you may need to lift the carpet and spray or bleach the flooring under the carpet.

Use febreeze, when you vacuum use a carpet powder that you can vacuum up and it will get rid of all the smells. If there is a strong urine odor, use an enzymatic cleaner like natures miracle found at petco.
