Holly
I am so sorry for the lost of your friend. And I really understand what you are going through. I had to but down my Justice at the first of the month. Here is what I did that helped me alot.
I got all the pictures of him I could find. There was alot. Then I made a scrapbook of his life. Looking at all his pictures and remembering all the good times we had together really help me.
I cried for 3 full days after Justice was sent to doggie heaven.
Go to the website below and put up a memorial for him.
Again I am so sorry for your loss.

I also adopted another dog from the shelter. She is 5years old and is a really good dog. You are the only person that will know when it is time for you to get another dog.
But I believe that the right dog will find you.

Well first you should calm down and think of all the good times you had with her. Then you could write a story and express your feelings. If your dog got put to sleep because it was old then buy one that looks kind of like the one that got put to sleep and share the things you did with the new dog. You should probably get a puppy.

Just know that he's in doggy heaven. My 10 yr. old Pitbull was put to sleep too because he had a tumor. It was sad, and I also cried for awhile because he was really loyal and a part of the family. After that, I stopped being sad because I got a new dog (a min pin). I recommend that you get a new puppy. Even though it will probably not top your old dog, seeing a newborn puppy makes you happy!

I had to have my German Shepherd Dog put to sleep on Dec. 2, 2001. She was my closest friend at the time and I know it is very painful to lose your best friend/fur child. Allow yourself the tears, as long as you need to cry and as much as you need to cry. Talk to people you trust who understand that losing a "pet" is just as hard as, and in fact IS losing a close family member.
Pamper yourself. If you can sleep, do it. Don't try not to think of him, it doesn't work. Instead talk about it as much as you need to.
You might want to write a poem or a prose piece about him. Later you can frame it by a photo of him.
This will get better with time. The loss of my GSD was really hard but now I remember her and that painful loss is replaced with warm memories.
Take care of yourself! In sympathy, Jo

I'm sorry to hear. I would think it would be best to not get a new pet anytime soon, unless you're very lonely. If it doesn't hurt to much, you could have a "celebration" on the dog's birthday of memories, and maybe tack up a photo of them on your bulletin board. Honestly, I don't think you should stop thinking of him, just not in a sad way. It was probably for the best that he was put to sleep because it was probably because he was suffering.

Making a scrapbook with lots of pictures and write down lots of good and funny memories...

I cant imagine how sad you are...the only close experience ive had (no where as close as your pain i know...) is Ive seen about 5 newborns cat die one day after the other (my cat's babies)...i think they were born too fast...but i had to feed them by myself because they wouldnt swallow...and i got so attached to them just doing that...and i was already devastated

I have a dog...and he is only 2....and im already thinking about how devastated I would be...

I dont know exactly why your dog was put down...but if it is because he was very sick...at least now you wont have to see your best friend suffer...

i think a scrapbook would start your healing....it will probably involve lots of tears but they would be tears of happiness......

My dog, my best friend, died three years ago and it was horible i hated it. one morning i went to school and when i cam home he wasn't there and mom said he died when she took him to the vet all i did was cry for a month and a half and eventually i got the goofy dog i have today. I realized that no matter how much i cried it wasn't going to change. I was also in third grade at the time and my dog was around since i was a newborn so i was his baby he prtected me. Cry and cry and cry away...when my sweetie passed away I was so shocked that I didn't cry, I was so deeply hurt tears wouldn't come out, and it took me 5 years to even get another pet.

Eventually you will just be eternally grateful for the blessing of having met such a good friend and having shared part of your life with a wonderful creature who loved you so much.

BUT believe me, crying is the only thing to do right now. I know it hurts like mad and I wish you happiness
Many virtual hugs (((((((())))))))

allow yourself to grieve. (if your human best friend died you would not expect to be over it in a day would you?) it takes time, and even with time you will always remember him but not with the same pain. if you like art work, make a collage of him or a painting. or write a poem or story about him. when and if you want another dog get one. let it speak out to you, when you connect you will know, but don't rush into it thinking it will stop the hurt (that would not be fair to the new dog)

I am so so sorry for your loss! I hate to say it, but nothing can take away your pain right now. All you have to think about is the fact that your dog had a good life and they are in a very beautiful happy place right now too. Grieve and then eventually, when you are ready, you can consider another puppy :)
