For food, duh, we can eat them, birds, monkeys, everybody including other insects eat insects. That is all. Some insects have a purpose, like these beetles in africa tend to eat so much of trees that they carve out huge caves in hundred year old trees, forming a home for bats in an otherwise caveless land. The bats in turn eat the beetles for food and live in the tree. If not for the bats, the tree would then die and get over eaten by the beetles. Circle of life baby.

Insects sometimes are polinaters for our food such as fruits and vegatables. Spiders kill and eat a variety of insects and keep their populations down or else we would be overun with insects such as flies, termites, and other insects that could cause harm to humans. Everything seems to have a place and purpose in our world.

No one invented them, they evolved with the angiosperms (flowering plants) so they could pollinate/have food. There is no such thing as "god" and if you want to ask a theology question don't do it in the Ecology section please... Science has no place for any gods.
